Local firm in trademark fight over ‘Placebook’
Local firm in trademark fight over ‘Placebook’

Social-media giant Facebook is threatening to unfriend a Hub start-up company unless the firm drops the name “Placebook” from its popular mobile-Web application.

Facebook is giving Boston-based Where Inc. until Tuesday to agree to remove a Placebook button from the company’s “Where” program, which helps cell-phone users find local restaurants and shops. Facebook also wants Where Inc. to withdraw a bid to trademark the Placebook name.

“Facebook will have no choice but to consider its alternative legal remedies in the event your client’s cooperation is not immediately forthcoming,” the company warned Where Inc.’s lawyers in a recent letter.

The Where application’s Placebook button allows users to store information about their favorite restaurants and shops in one place.
