26. The most important aspect of American ignorance on THIS board
is not realizing how equally ignorant the other nationalities are!

*The sizeable share of masochists and self-haters here may want to ignore that fact, however.

Trust me, much of it is not impressive -- In fact, a lot of "their" shows are OUR shows, at least in Britain and Canada...

Take a look over at Amazon.com.uk...You'll be amazed at how many American series air there and then "best sell" as DVD packages.

had perhaps exported more TV shows and show ideas to the US than it had imported. That's all, and I'd hardly be proud of doing some sort of TV show genealogy and gold medal count right now. I think it's far more important to realize that what matters is the open exchange of ideas which makes all countries richer for the effort.

BTW, yes TV does suck in a lot of other countries, but I don't see that they watch very much of it, except of course for the ubiquitous football.

51. But a quick check of Amazon.com.uk would suggest that assertion to be wrong..
...but I see you're doing a little backpedaling now.

"BTW, yes TV does suck in a lot of other countries.."

Well, thanks, at least, for the confirmation...I can assure you that it will surprise many on here, so accustomed are they to being berated for some sort of imagined uniqueness in the "stupid" department.

As for this: " but I don't see that they watch very much of it, except of course for the ubiquitous football".

Well, you may not "see" it..just as you didn't see that tv around the world is less than wonderful, right away either...Unless you've got links to some stats which would say otherwise, implying that other countries do NOT "watch that much of it" is pure conjecture on your part...Having made ONE concession on the subject of television, you seem to be scrambling for a way to find SOMETHING that makes non-Americans "superior".

73. Only an American would be sensitive about having/not having the best TV
in the world. Really, no one else gives a shit.

So since you seem to think that trying to find common ground for agreement is somehow equal to backpedaling, let me first hope that you don't work for the State Department, and second, do my best to avoid any possible common ground.

You do know, don't you, that a large part of Europe buys its DVDs through Amazon.uk so that they can get better prices and a better language selection, and that they like to see shows in their original language, possibly subtitled? And that would impossibly skew your in-depth analysis?

Did you ever consider that their TV sucks, not because they are stupid, but because they have smaller national markets, less resources, and a smaller language market? And that they watch less TV and don't give a shit.

Funny you should ask about a link, because before posting the last time I was curious and did happen to look it up:

Definitely less.

I can think of only one thing, and one thing only that makes non-Americans superior, and that is the very notion of American superiority held by insecure Americans.

From 2002-2003 on it was the one thing that people from all over the world universally volunteered to me as something they didn't like about Americans, and it was the hubris of that stupid invasion that made them feel compelled to seek me out.

And not one of them even knew someone who knew someone who knew someone in their own lands who thought that the question of "who's best" was even a valid question. They know there a lot of smart people, good food, and rich culture in every country and the very notion that one country would be so insecure as to think that it was somehow "best" was abhorrent and more than a little bit puzzling. Nobody else gives a shit about such dumb questions, and nobody else would get wound up by a dumb little satire. Got it?

Re: No one "gives a shit"?...Clearly, YOU do, or you wouldn't have gone to this much work!B-)

You are struggling to fit anybody who disagrees with you into some pre-formed stereotype about Americans....

American "insecurity"?..Please..Frankly, I think much of the European US-bashing comes from a deep resentment at no longer possessing the military power they once had....After all, if you really felt "superior", your vaunted (if relatively new,) humanism would kick in to restrain all that gleeful condescension

There is really no point in arguing about who is superior to whom. The claim of American superiority is propagated by our right wing to distract their supporters, who are actually getting screwed by right wing policies. This propaganda is often proclaimed loudly, but it is not necessarily widely believed.

This is a liberal blog, and DU participants are not even at all impressed by the right wing noise machine. However, we do appreciate a sense of fairness and a recognition that there are distortions around all national perceptions.

We liberal Americans look at ourselves in the mirror often....Euros should do the same.

87. Wrong, wrong, and wrong again.
Cute that Euro thing, but wrong and it sounds like you couldn't be bothered to type out "Eurotrash". Pure Midwest boy here, weaned straight to coffee, sweet corn, and voting a very left Democratic ticket. I was the guy who spent grade school recess arguing politics between innings.

Wrong about work, nothing to it, as I seem to spend most of my time telling Europeans that the USA is a big and complicated place, and trying to tell Americans that other people around the world know a thing or two as well and are not a bunch of dumbasses begging for the USA to tell them how they should live.

Wrong about "superiority", as I explicitly stated, I think there is none. The question of perceived superiority comes in only when right-wing tries to make my fellow Ami's feel bad when they see that other people are smart enough to have a good idea that might not be profitable to the chosen.

And never, not once have I heard a whisper or seen a line of text since Thatcher that even hints there is any MIC envy. That's because it doesn't exist, a fantasy of those who think it should exist. And humanism...did you think somehow that I didn't have a continuous history of humanist thought? An assumption about my background?

Moving on...come on, "recognition that there are distortions around all national perceptions." Now wasn't that the point of that silly satire you spent so much time railing against?

So now who is it that's got a problem with stereotypes? Got your mirror handy?

regardless of that, my new clock addict friends here have put down their beers and dirty porn long enough to offer to send you a beer stein or cuckoo clock.

They like Americans very much and remark often about how friendly and warm they are, "very nice people," they say, "but some are not very bright." They also are quick to offer to put you up if you should ever come visit, though I would caution you they never stop smoking. Are you a cheese-head from Wisconsin? We have cheese-heads here too, just up the road in The Netherlands. Wonderful, wonderful people who drive very slowly and have a good sense of humor about themselves.

You mean like stupidity?..Yeah, right..Maybe you should talk to African-Americans about those "good natured" stereotypes.

Hint: Anytime someone speaks of a group not theirs and mentions that "some" of them are..blah blah, they actually mean "most". Otherwise it would go unsaid as it's clear that "some" of any group are, for instance, "not so smart".

78. The difference is that most Americans
as opposed to most Europeans or :gasp: Australians, are not only ignorant about other nations- even where they are on a map, but willfully and often proudly and profoundly so.

Part of that stems of course from the fact that they're taught from a very early age that they're "the best" in everything- and that the rest of the world revolves around them.

Come to think of it, this could also stem from the fact that most Americans don't even have a passport- much less enough paid vacation time to actually travel outside their own borders or continent.

Then again, one would first have to have the interest to do so (and know on a map where they'd be going)!

See, e.g. Ms. Teen South Carolina explaining why 1/5 of Americans can't find America on a world map: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww

Fact is, mate, until recently we didn't need passports to go to Canada or Mexico...And another fact is more Americans visit Europe than the other way around..Of course, Euros no longer NEED a passport for most of Europe, do they?..Hell, they don't even need a six to ten hour transatlantic flight!...It only takes them a few hours to go to France, for instance, should they be coming from the UK....It takes me four hours to go from Chicago to St. Louis..It's a BIG freakin' country, mate!

The fact that you all get MUCH more vacation time than we do doesn't hurt either, does it?...With all that, mate, we STILL outnumber the euros, and I would bet the 'stralians, in visiting THEIR countries as opposed to their visiting OUR country...Now what do ya make of that?

I understand the Aussie's resentment mate, and me spouse and me's experienced it firsthand..Hell, they don't have the "culture" and the "history" of the Euros..and they don't have the power and high profile of the yanks...The Canucks are the same, I suspect...Hell, the pair of ya never got full independence from the Brits!.

Shame, all 'dat..I can see how it leaves ye feeling all resentful and "insecure" like.

:nopity:

89. As far as the "power" and "profile"
I suspect you'll be seeing some money flowing into the states from Oz, considering the strength of the economy, low unemployment, high wages and the Aussie dollar nearly at parity.

Might just help some of your ailing small businesses survive for another year. ;)

As to the number of Aussies with passports, a rough guess would be at least half- which considering the population, would approach the US in raw numbers.

with something like a link, you might merit some attention..In the meantime, judging by your Forum, you aren't doing well enough to even have a "decent" political forum of your own!

BTW, it's clear you didn't know what I meant by "power" and "profile",

Ignorance and impoverishment are their own rewards, I suppose- though we're not beyond feeling sorry for you (if for no other reason than the loss of willingly throwing away your potential).

124. I've lived in five different countries, and in in each country, the people
have strange ideas about what people in other countries are like, what they do, who they are. The North Germans think the South Germans are lazy. And the South Germans have an equally negative stereotype of the North Germans. It begins to seem really funny after you've lived in a few places. It isn't the stereotypes themselves that are accurate, it's the existence of the stereotypes that is so accurate. I realized after I got your post that you might have thought I agreed with the labels put on the countries. No. I agree with the fact that we tend to think of other countries as "Oh, they're like that." That is what is accurate, not the labels themselves.

No, baalath, it most certainly would not, ...and that question has been raised in this thread numerous times, only to be met with a resounding SILENCE by all parties, Lol.

As a couple of our braver posters have asked facetiously, "You mean you can be a progressive without showing contempt for the rest of the country"?

Too many here seem to think so, and it's a subject which has been only half-considered here and is ripe for more "thought" clarity and discussion.
