Delaware House nominee: Separation of Church and State a "Nazi position"

Glen Urquhart: Separation of church and state is ultimately a Nazi position

The Republican nominee for Delaware's open seat in the House, Glen Urquhart, believes that support for the "separation of church and state" is ultimately a Nazi position which originated not with Thomas Jefferson, but rather with Adolf Hitler. Neither the Delaware state GOP nor the national Republican Party have rejected or objected to Urquhart's comments -- and why should they?

This sort of attitude has been standard with the Christian Right for decades, though they usually attribute church/state separation to communists instead of to Nazis. Since the don't appear to genuinely understand either one of them -- though the difference is probably irrelevant.

Do you know, where does this phrase separation of Church and State come from? Does anybody know? ... Actually, that's exactly, it was not in Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists. He was reassuring that the federal government wouldn't trample on their religion. The exact phrase 'separation of Church and State' came out of Adolph Hitler's mouth, that's where it comes from.

Next time your liberal friends talk about the separation of Church and State ask them why they're Nazis.

Seriously, is there anything these dipshits wont compare to the Nazis? :argh:

8. Glen Beck was pulling this shit, too-- it's a meme. But, what the dumb mofo's don't know...
is that the first time the phrase was used in the Americas was by Roger Williams, a Puritan and Baptist minister (sorta defrocked after a while, though) who founded Rhode Island as a free-religion colony back in the 1630s.

And it was not even Jefferson who so brilliantly came up with it in that letter about the pirates, but Madison who was the brains behind the Virginia Statue of Religious Liberty, upon which the First Amendment was based.

(Madison was the brains behind much of what Jefferson is credited for, but let the doddering old fool take the bows.)

9. Been a staple of American Christianity for a while
As I've said on earlier threads, this has been part of the curriculum in Christian schools for a while.

The Nazis weren't against Jews, per se--they hated religion, and Jews were persecuted for being religious and believing in G-d, according to this formulation.

The next step is to point out that the Nazis killed lots of Catholics too--further proof that it was religion that was the enemy.

It all then fits neatly into the "Christians as victims" meme; Christians were the real victims of Hitler and the nazis, and Q.E.D. anyone who says anything against American Christians is persecuting them JUST LIKE THE NAZIS DID.

20. Jefferson's Wall of Separation Letter
Mr. President

To messers Nehemiah Dodge, Ephraim Robbins, & Stephen S. Nelson, a committee of the Danbury Baptist association in the state of Connecticut.

Gentlemen

The affectionate sentiments of esteem and approbation which you are so good as to express towards me, on behalf of the Danbury Baptist association, give me the highest satisfaction. my duties dictate a faithful and zealous pursuit of the interests of my constituents, & in proportion as they are persuaded of my fidelity to those duties, the discharge of them becomes more and more pleasing.

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion, and the Executive authorised only to execute their acts, I have refrained from prescribing even those occasional performances of devotion, practiced indeed by the Executive of another nation as the legal head of its church, but subject here, as religious exercises only to the voluntary regulations and discipline of each respective sect. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection & blessing of the common father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves & your religious association assurances of my high respect & esteem.

(signed) Thomas Jefferson

21. Thomas Jefferson felt very strongly about separation of church and state.
Excerpts taken from Andrew Lipscomb and Albert Bergh, The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, in 20 volumes:

Skepticism toward religious authority:

-The clergy, by getting themselves established by law and ingrafted into the machine of government, have been a very formidable engine against the civil and religious rights of man (Letter to J. Moor, 1800).
-The clergy...believe that any portion of power confided to me will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly: for I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: and enough, too, in their opinion (Letter to Benjamin Rush, 1800).
-History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes (Letter to von Humboldt, 1813).
-In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own (Letter to H. Spafford, 1814).
