14. If you're not mad enough now, FOTF will help
James Dobson's hate-mongering Focus on the Family is defending homophobic bullies by actually playing the victim card. Absolutely unbelievable:

Focus on the Family, however, says that bullying isn’t the problem, anti-bullying policies are. The group’s True Tolerance campaign argues that school strategies to target bullying are really covert ways for "activists who want to promote homosexuality in kids" to "capture the hearts and minds of our children at their earliest stages."

Candi Cushman of True Tolerance asserts that "gay activists" are "infiltrating classrooms under the cover of ‘anti-bullying’ or ‘safe schools’ initiatives." That’s why Focus on the Family claims to be defending the "innocence and purity" of children against LGBT groups that conspire "under the cover of so-called safe-school initiatives" and use "‘Safety’... as a political arm-twisting tool to force an adult agenda into schools."
(Emphasis added)

Focus on teh Family, however, says that terrorism isn’t the problem, anti-terrorism policies are. The group argues that the country's strategies to target terrorism are really covert ways for "activists who want to promote America to kids" to "capture the hearts and minds of their children at their earliest stages."

Candy Cushman asserts that "American activists" are "infiltrating countries under the cover of ‘anti-terrorism’ or ‘peace-bringing’ initiatives." That’s why Focus on teh Family claims to be defending the "innocence and purity" of children against neocon groups that conspire "under the cover of so-called peace-bringing initiatives" and use "‘Peace’... as a political arm-twisting tool to force their agenda in other countries."

I wonder if they would argue THAT?

24. Having worked in the film industry I can honestly say that I have been bullied by gays
But it wasn't because they were gay or because I was hetero; it's because I had a nice job and they were two assholes who wanted it and went on a slander and sabotage campaign against me with the help of a few friends until I quit (not a big deal in retrospect; the whole studio went down eventually and everyone lost their jobs). Point is; anyone can be a bully. But are heterosexuals bullied for being heterosexual? No.

26. I was bullied by a gay man once
Not because I'm straight, but because I was poor. He publically humiliated me in the worst possible ways...so badly that my empoyer, who had hired him to give a teaching clinic and for whom I was doing a favor by attending to "round-out" a semi-private spot, gave me her private time slot (personally, I would have preferred my money back).

Although it didn't drive me to suicide, it did drive me to "career-suicide" in a field that was my life's dream.

To me, that just says that gays are people do, meaning they can be assholes as well as great people.

(aside: I spent my childhood from about agoe 9 or 10 to mid-late teens constantly teased and harrassed by both girls and boys, in part because I was perceived as gay. I didn't know as a small child what the words queer, fairy or fag meant until many years later. :()

28. Bullies are bullies
Bullies are bullies no matter their gender, race, religion, sexuality...thousands of teens AND many adults die from bullying each year. Most we never hear about...gay, straight, or otherwise.

How many young men and women does the media ignore? How many grieving parents watch as the media chooses which children to mourn, highlight, and build a cause around.

This young man is worth the attention. So are the many we never see or hear about, who are mourned only by their friends and loved ones.

One child bullied for any reason, is one too many.

You are aware that there are a great deal of heterosexuals who believe in equal rights for gay people?

31. I straight but very sympathetic towards this issue.
Nevertheless, I think this is a bit of an overstatement. Bullying occurs at many levels and not just of gays by straights. The recent suicides are horrible examples of prejudice and the evil of bullying. While I understand that it is a gay issue, it is not just a gay issue.

34. that's a good point
I don't think I like the whole "us" versus "them" feel. I think we need to stop bullying regardless of who the victim is...and regardless of the identities of the aggressor(s).

Incivility is incivility. And, bullying can happen anywhere, even on DU. I think we have to make a conscious effort to bring down the tone of the rhetoric and give our children better examples.
