Dan Webster's Religious Guru's Advice For Women "Like Sharia Law," Says Noted Author

"In their advice to women, the books read like sharia law, with strict instructions on how to dress, date, and run a home, and with strict consequences for disobedience." - Hanna Rosin, God's Harvard, page 92

"Once they are married, the husband "gives the law" and the wife "works out the proper procedure to carry it out." Equal authority in marriage is "Satan's goal." The key to a happy marriage is "the wife's submission and the husband's sacrifice." - Rosin, quoting Bill Gothard, page 93

"I enjoy the advice he's given. I think it's been a major part of my life. I'm not ashamed of that. What he has said I believe to be the truth." - Daniel Webster, on Bill Gothard, 1997

snip

As I've detailed in a recent Alternet story, Daniel Webster's intimate, over three decade long involvement with evangelist Bill Gothard appears similar to a classic guru-disciple or mentor-pupil relationship and has included speaking multiple times at Gothard's conferences, traveling with Gothard to Korea in 1996, using Bill Gothard's material to homeschool his six children, making an instructional video for Gothard's Institute For Basic Life Principles, and, when Webster became speaker of the Florida legislature in 1997, hiring four of Gothard's IBLP employees as high-level Florida State House staffers.

1. So Grayson wasn't far off the mark, after all
In fact, he was damned accurate with the "Taliban Dan" tag.

7. Grayson SHOULD be criticized for "creative editing"
That's wrong. And he should be taken to task for it.

But as for his main point - that Webster is a male supremacist, Grayson is spot on.

8. b-b-but it will be THEIR kind of sharia law with Christian window dressing so that's ok!
stonings, making the women folk stay home and birth babies until their uterus gives out that is gwad's plan don't ya know. http://open.salon.com/blog/nlq/2010/03/08/are_jim_bob_michelle_duggar_quiverfull

it's not like they want women to be veiled from head to toe just collar bone to ankle! can't have women defrauding those poor men causing lustful thoughts with a naked kneecap would ruin him for his future wife! http://books.google.com/books?id=GTzG06dEgxAC&pg=PA45&dq=defraud+gothard&cd=7#v=onepage&q=defraud%20gothard&f=false http://razingruth.blogspot.com/2009/12/can-men-defraud-women.html

and when any of 'em hit their wives it is bibilical chastisement for her own good, not bad Islamic wife abuse. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,944839,00.html

4. I'm Still Mad at Congressman Grayson
The Taliban Dan ad was too heavy handed considering the right wing media that has taken over this nation. Therefore, the focus and controversy became about Alan Grayson and not Dan Webster, as it should have been. Normally, Democrats are so nuanced it makes me angry, but this was a case where less may have been more.

Of course, I'm not angry solely for moral reasons, although I do have a distaste for negative ads. I live in FL-8. The ad seems to have backfired, and I'm worried Grayson won't get re-elected.

Oh, and disliking negative ads - I know Republicans do crap like this all the time, but I don't believe that justifies us doing it - I like to think we're better than that. Of course, if it comes to winning dirty or losing clean, I'd still take winning dirty. In the end, it's about the issues and how one governs.

6. I would very much
like to have just 2 minutes w/ this Gothard (got hard???) dude....alone. I'd like to show him some equality.

I'm so sick of this backwardness. Hell, just turn off the lights and we'll return to the Dark Ages.
