McAdams rakes in $650,000 in September

By John McArdle | October 2, 2010

Attorney Joe Miller's (R) upset primary victory over Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) in late August didn't just give an unexpected boost to his tea party backers, it also stirred support for Democratic nominee Scott McAdams.

McAdams, the mayor of Sitka, announced Saturday he raked in over $650,000 in about five weeks following the primary.

Before Murkowski was defeated in the primary, McAdams was expected to be little more than a sacrificial lamb this cycle. After joining the Senate race in early June he had raised just $17,000 by early August, according to his pre-primary fundraising report. But some Democrats now believe Murkowski's write-in campaign could split the GOP vote and give them a chance to steal the Alaska seat in November.

McAdams' recent financial haul has allowed him to launch a media offensive that includes a pair of commercials as well as radio advertising.

Over half of McAdams' contributions came from Alaskans and 90 percent were under $200, according to the release from his campaign.

"I haven't taken trips to Washington D.C., and I haven't had big dollar dinners with corporate donors," McAdams said in the release. "This campaign is about Alaskans and giving them the opportunity to support a strong future for our state."

This past week Miller has been on a fundraising jaunt in Washington, D.C. Since winning the primary he's been embraced by the national GOP establishment.

4. Here it is ---

Miller - 38%, Murkowski - 36%, McAdams - 22%, among likely voters.

Murkowski was leading Miller for a while but now Miller is ahead by 2 points.

If this were not so close to election day it might be good news because if Murkowski's write-in supporters think she can't make it they might switch to McAdams as the only way to stop Miller and that could snowball. However, McAdams is way behind so we could be looking at a Senator Miller. Very hard to see how McAdams can overcome such a polling deficit.

Here are some McAdams ads -----

Help us, Scott MaAdams, you're our only hope (Miller as Darth Vader) ---

More positive ads ---

Here's one that shrewdly tries to appeal to Alaska's local interests --

These ads are designed to take advantage of the Miller-Murkowski bloodbath. It could work if McAdams had more time. With only 4 weeks till election day it looks rough. I don't see Miller losing at this point.

These ads are cleverly laid back and folksy but McAdams is up against an enormous behemoth of corporate cash funding his opponents.

Don't forget. Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, popcorn and toothbrushes are all unconstitutional. Better vote for Miller.
