Contraception often Missing from Sex Education

While nearly all U.S. teens report receiving sex education, only about two-thirds have learned about birth control. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that most (96 to 97 percent) of teens reported receiving formal sex education, but only 62 percent of males and 70 percent of females received education about methods of birth control. The data were from a representative national survey (the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth) of teens ages 15-19. In Texas, the 2009 YRBS study revealed that 94 percent of Texas school districts offer Abstinence-Only education or none at all. In addition, over half of Texas high school students reported that they have had sex.
