WASHINGTON -- Trailing Sen. Barbara Boxer in fundraising and in polls, Carly Fiorina's Senate campaign has received a $2 million boost from the national Republican Party and is using the money for a statewide TV ad blaming Boxer for the country's economic woes.
The financial help comes at a critical time for Fiorina, the Republican former CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Recent polls show her trailing the Democratic senator by six to eight percentage points, after the two were locked in a dead heat for most of the summer. Boxer opened the lead shortly after she launched an advertising blitz slamming Fiorina's record at HP.
Lagging Boxer in campaign fundraising, Fiorina has not been able to match the three-term senator on TV. The $2 million infusion from the National Republican Senatorial Committee could help the first-time candidate better compete in that all-important arena.
The joint Fiorina-NRSC ad accuses Boxer of "trillions in reckless, wasteful spending," and "destroying small business, killing jobs, crushing hopes." A somber violin tune plays in the background, with images of a tent city for the homeless and a business holding an emergency liquidation sale.
"California cannot afford Boxer for six more long years," the narrator concludes.
Boxer voted for the $814 billion stimulus bill last year and opposed the sweeping tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush. The senator argues, and some respected economists concur, that the recession would have been deeper if not for the stimulus spending. Boxer also notes that she voted for recently approved legislation to help small businesses, which Fiorina opposed.
Fiorina calls the stimulus package a waste of taxpayer money, arguing that it failed to stem unemployment and that most of the jobs it created will evaporate once the government funding runs out.
The TV ad is Fiorina's second; both were critical of Boxer. Boxer has also aired two TV ads criticizing Fiorina's record at HP and one ad touting her own record as senator.
"Carly Fiorina laid off 30,000 workers and shipped thousands of jobs overseas while she collected $100 million and California families suffered," Boxer's campaign manager, Rose Kapolczynski, said in a statement. "Perhaps that's why she refuses to talk about her record."
