189 Huey Cobra 'Z' model Helicopters To Be Delivered By End of 2021
unhappycamper note: Since the ‘Pentagon’ (Righthaven LLC?) has ‘requested’ that I only post one paragraph from articles on Army Times, and Airforce Times, I’ve decided to give ya’ll an unhappycamper summary of the article and a link to the OP. To keep in that same (new) tradition, I will also do the same for articles on Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, stripes.com and military.com.To keep in that same (new) tradition, I will also do the same for for articles on Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, stripes.com and military.com.

To read the article in the military's own words, you will need to click the link.

Read all about Fair Use here. It sure is beginning to smell like fascism.

unhappycamper summary of this article: The Huey Cobbra first flew in September 1965, and 189 Z models will be delivered the end of 2021.

The AH-64 costs at least $20 million dollars; I wonder how much the Ah-1Z costs?

Zulu Passes OpEval (at last …)

According to the release 189 new and remanufactured AH-1Z helicopters will be purchased, with deliveries expected to be complete by the end of 2021.

1. I bet it's way cheaper to upgrade these old Cobra airframes than to build new Apaches.

It had better be - the AH-64 is a far more sophisticated, survivable package.

5. The 64 has a LOT of stuff that the Cobra doesn't.
I can't get into detail, but suffice it to say that the 64 is an awesome weapons package!!

2. The Cobra is actually made by Bell, not Hughs, and is not a "Huey" at all.
The base Cobra UH1 was THE attack helicopter of the Vietnam era, and evidently its grandchildren are still in service and will be for decades. It was a great design, and I think it will be in service somewhere for another 50 years as long as parts are available.

I don't see much value in the newer designs, but the military LOVES the latest gadgets. I remember they were going to obsolete the A-10 Warthog (Thunderbolt II) ground attack plane...till it proved invaluable in combat. IIRC, it is still being used.

3. newer is not always better .... sometimes not always
I always thought the A-6 and A-7 were both solid planes ..
the A-6 with the jammer package or as a intell bird .. nice
and the A-7 all weather attack plane ... excellent ....
had good legs and still have enough punch to put a
hurting on a target .... not that impressed with the hornet
no legs or no teeth ... your choice ..
the "super Hornet" have seen where they are having a lot
of maint problems with it ...

Sigh .... newer isn't always better ....

8. Both of them saved lives beyond counting, and I KNOW that every time
an infantry soldier or Marine saw one overhead, they immediatly knew things were about to get better.
They were certainly worth their cost, many times over.

10. Actually the A-10 decision had nothing to do with it's capability.
They army stood up and said they'd take over the planes if the air force disposed of them (and the budget that went with them). The air force simply didn't want to lose the budget and are trying to transfer it to the F-35 program.
