Pentagon made up concerns about soldiers' bandwidth

Youtube shoots from the hip

By Nick Farrell: Friday 18 May 2007, 08:35

THE PENTAGON'S CLAIM that its overseas soldiers were sapping too much bandwidth has been contested by the founders of Youtube.

<snip>

Hurley, chief technology officer Steve Chen and Youtube spokeswoman Julie Supan said that the company is trying to work with the Pentagon in hopes the military will reverse course or at least partially repeal the ban.

They were especially puzzled by the block because it came just days after the military launched its own channel on the web site offering what it calls a "boots-on-the-ground" perspective of scenes of combat, they said.

More here. µ

1. Hmm curiious
as a navy wife I knew I coudl NOT send attachments back in 2002, including photos

Somewhere they are loosing bandwith. and I can see both sides.

Hmm

Oh and yes Darpa created teh first layer of the Internat, but has had little to do with actual development for ahme decades now

I can smell a compromise where soldiers will be able to post but not upload video, or any other attachments...

2. I personally know of people who have spent time playing World of Freaking Warcraft from Iraq.
Great use of the military's bandwith.

3. Well I can talk from my experience
and from the article they have "cafes" that are not tied to the DOD network...

They will be able to post from those cafes and play WoW, but as a navy wife, we were specifically told Attachments, email will bounce

So as more of the story emerges... I can see where they will compromise

6. I understand perfectly
and each of the services has its own rules....

And wink, wink, troops have used military hardware to play games on thrid shifts forever and a day.

But it seems Youtube and DoD will come to an agreement

Oh and WoW... that will be cracked down if they find out, and decide to actually not turn a blind eye

:-)

That also happens

5. I don't know
A ban on email attachments may be more of a securty thing. I have to wonder how much of this precious bandwidth is wireless vs. landline. Personally, I think the Pentagon is making sh*t up.

8. Think its a money thing?
when they said they are sapping to much bandwidth do you think they are trying to save money?if thats the case i think its tax dollars well spent to allow our soldiers too play games and send videos to there family or receive those pictures and videos from home.

I am a skeptic as well and would not be surprised if they are blocking these things for purely propaganda reasons you know not letting us at home know too much or the troops know too much.

11. They don't want their soldiers "in the field' having access
Edited on Mon May-21-07 02:11 AM by SoCalDem
to any site that tells what's really going on. Think about it, each group of soldiers is isolated with their own small group, and they only "know" what's told to them. they are told daily, probably, how great things are going..how they have "turned the corner"..

If they can access sites that spell it out in all the gory detail, they just might start to wonder just WHY they are there..

It's NOT about what they are POSTING.. It's what they might be reading/seeing.
