SF Chronicle: Decision to cancel KGO governors debate was "mutual"
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/10/05/MNJB1FO7AG.DTL

California's gubernatorial candidates have pulled the plug on a long-anticipated radio debate today in San Francisco with KGO's Ronn Owens.

Political analysts say the move allows them to dodge tough questions in a race roiled by the story of an undocumented housekeeper who worked for Republican Meg Whitman.

Representatives for Whitman and her opponent, Democrat Jerry Brown, said the decision to cancel the hourlong debate this morning was "mutual." They added that the meeting had not been finalized.

According to this article, both the Brown and whitman camps agreed to cancel the scheduled debate on the Ronn Owens talk show this morning.

Seems to me what really, happened is that whitman begged off because she knew she'd get a lot of questions about her nanny problem and she's obviously unable to come up with a credible story.

Brown on the other hand has nothing to lose by agreeing to cancel. Regardless of what actually happened, the perception will be that whitman cancelled the debate because her campaign is floundering and on the defensive and she is running from unscripted public appearances. Brown is smart enough to realize it.

3. I'm surprised Whitman has continued to campaign and
debate. She's toast and she knows it. The best thing she can do is put her tail between her legs and go home. She still will be on the ballot and some will still vote for her, but to continue to be out in the public is futile. She has lost and no amount of election tampering will fix that. I think this might be the beginning of her doing just that.

4. Whitman fatigue was setting in even before the nanny controversy
We've been bombarded with those ads for months and people were getting sick of seeing them.

Let's face it Whitman does not wear well. She's unattractive, and she comes across as extremely condescending.

The more she appears on TV the less she seems a serious candidate. And the whole campaign is starting to look like what it is - an expensive ego trip for an insecure billionaire.

If she was smart she'd do exactly what you suggest. And stop the hemorrhaging.

5. The Columbus Day debate in Marin county is still on
Dominican College is hosting the NBC sponsored debate with Tom Brokaw as moderator. Whitless can't balk on this one, and everyone knows it, especially considering she led the challenge.

"We can take back our state. And you know, the first step -- I just got as I was coming over here an invitation from Dominican College for a debate sponsored by NBC and all the NBC affiliates in California during primetime the week of October 11. And you know what I say to Jerry Brown? Bring it on! I accept that debate invitation because I can't wait to talk specifics with Jerry Brown. I'm the only candidate who has laid out a detailed plan to turn California around. Jerry Brown has not said one word specifically on what he wants to do. His website has nothing about policy or the way forward, and Californians want to know specifically -- how are we going to turn this state around? So bring it on. Let's debate the week of October 11!" - Meg Whitman, 10 June 2010

Bring it on!
