Report: 'Disabled' Calif. chief rode bike and ran

Associated Press October 5, 2010

A California police chief who resigned over outrage about huge salaries for city officials claimed he was disabled but took spinning classes and ran a 5K charity race months before taking the job.

The Los Angeles Times reports that former Bell Police Chief Randy Adams completed the 3.1-mile 2009 Glendale race in under 32 minutes. And his application for Orange County sheriff in 2008 said he enjoys skiing and jogging.

Adams made a deal to be declared disabled when he was hired as police chief of the tiny Los Angeles suburb last year. That could allow him to pay taxes on only half of his potential $400,000-a-year state pension — although the deal is under investigation.

Adams' attorney says his client is disabled, and the exercise is good for his back.

3. Sadly, this kind of double dipping seems to go on all the time.
The bit where someone "retires" from their civil service post and start drawing a pension, then manage to fill their own vacancy and start collecting salary again and building up a second pension. Or they get themselves hired back as "consultants" at twice their old wage. I heard they're investigating some post office people for this type of crap.

Wonder if it's too late for me to get some cushy gummit job where I might actually get a livable pension and health care?
