Did you know that there are now more people getting food stamps than paychecks?

I heard it today from some guy on the radio. Rush, I believe he called himself.

So I googled it.

and found where this "FACT" came from

Newt Gingrich memo: 'Paychecks vs. food stamps'

http://wvgazette.com/News/politico/201010050280

Newt Gingrich, the former Republican House speaker now general chairman of American Solutions for Winning the Future, plans to send this memo on Tuesday to candidates around the country suggesting a “closing argument” for the final month of the campaign.

This year, the House Republican’s Pledge to America has set the stage for a powerful, symbolic closing argument for candidates seeking to unseat the left-wing, big spending, job killing Democrats: paychecks versus food stamps.

It is an unassailable fact that in June, more food stamps were distributed by the government than ever before in American history

You should use this vivid contrast between the tax raising, job killing agenda of the Democrats and the low tax, job creating agenda of the Republicans as a way to reinforce the choice for voters this fall.

Which future do I want? More food stamps? Or more paychecks?

This is the choice we want to drive home again and again for voters from now until Election Day.

1. I'd say that the more food stamps meme shows how the Repub agenda worked for the last 8 years.

If you want more people on food stamps, elect repubs. But then their solution to more people on food stamps is to eliminate the food stamp program.

3. Bullshit, pure and simple.
It simply isn't possible.

And even if it were true, it would've been the doing of Republican economic policy anyway.

4. Simple minded thinking
Many of the working poor are eligible for some food stamps- so they get a pay check (to tiny to live on) and food stamps.

7. When my husband was in the military we were eligible for food stamps.
I don't know if it is still that bad, but if it is, is Rush going to apologize to our men and women in uniform or pretend that they are all Democrats?

6. Working people are on food stamps
People who work for airlines, for instance.

Pilots are living in parking lots of airports in trailers.

Teachers, police and firefighters cannot afford to live in some of the cities where they work.

Wages have not kept pace with inflation for 30 years.

http://www.mybudget360.com/income-budget-game-over-for-the-american-middle-class-inflation-adjusted-wages-up-20-percent-in-last-20-years-while-housing-costs-are-up-56-percent-and-healthcare-costs-are-up-155-percent/

The bail out kept banks from closing down, even if they have hoarded and refused to loan - not to say they should have had the carte blanche they had - but this action avoided a meltdown after years of deregulated financial markets that allowed irresponsible and quarterly-driven profit makers to sacrifice substance for greed via worthless, Ponzi-scheme investments.

We now have a little bit of a social safety net to keep the worst ravages of great depression style scenarios away as part of American reality.

The economic problems we face today are not because there are people on food stamps. The problem is the huge disparity between wealth owners and wage owners. Banks are still holding on to cash, afraid to lend (or attempting to manipulate public perception in an election year.)

NAFTA allowed companies to outsource union-wage jobs.

Fundamental change needs to occur in the U.S. in regard to policies that respect people's work as much as they do a tiny minority's profit.

Thank you for a good reply!

Do you have a source for that sentence of yours I quoted? If you do, I would appreciate it.

Thanks! :hi:
