When the San Bruno pipeline exploded, why did firefighters from Sonoma go there?
Fire departments from counties FAR, FAR away responded to that fire.

Why?

1. Our poor firefighters spend more time OUT of town, than in
They are always sent elsewhere to help out..but then I live in "fire-country, USA" :(

2. They have interagency agreements!
Besides these fire departments are in a progressive area of the country.

Sadly, Tennessee is not.

4. Answer: to fight a fire! Or, "it's what they do!"
That's right, it's what they do. Period.

It really shouldn't be so complicated.

6. Yes, what was in it for them?
Profits? Market share?

I don't think so - Sonoma residents PAID for that "intervention". Do they have no fiscal responsibility to their shareholders taxpayers?

7. My guess is that they were available to answer the call for help.
If you pull in all the trucks from one area, that area then has no coverage.

12. because there are agreements in place for coverage
as well as an enforceable way for those departments to get reimbursed.

What? You thought they responded for free?

14. Mutual Aid agreements
but what would I know?

Oh and yes TRADITION...

Finally, though Firefighters hate the actual fires, they LOVE putting them out...

I mean I can appreciate playing around with an expensive toy... and some fire hose!!!!

<--------------- to this day I collect toy fire engines and ambulances, not as intensely as I once did...

They bring NICE memories. Hell, the other day when we went to the Air Show, while hubby was oogling at the F-18, I was slobbering over the new fangled and much lighter Jaws of Life!

15. Good question!
Why did they go to NYC after 9/11, or to the Gulf after Katrina? For that matter, why do they go to Australia during the off-season to help fight fires there (and Aussie firefighters came here in their off-season)?
