Maybe The Tea-party- Glenn Becks-and the like are what we deserve.
My wife made this point during the health care debates and I'm sure we will both be slammed again (me for posting this - She- for thinking this...as being crazy wingers...) But I honestly am bringing this up as a real debate here. Only because she brought up the point again.

(Background--During the health care debate there was a gentleman from the Netherlands (I believe) who would make you tube post defending the "socialist" medical system in his country..)

My wife brought up a point after listening to this gentleman. "We Can't have such compassion and understanding in this country because we have taught ourselves not to be". We will never have universal health care and we are slowly losing other "socialized programs -ie Fire Departments to this sickness or greed. Think about the Phrases we use and hear all the time "Keeping up with the Joneses", "The Grass is always greener on the other side", "When's my turn". "Pick yourself up". We have basically unconsciously--or perhaps consciously ingrained into the American Psyche that we need too be better than our neighbors and look out for ourselves instead of caring for one another.

Look at the report of the Gentleman's house burning down and the fire department didn't do anything about it. Look at the last time you happened down a street and saw a homeless person. Next time you do. Just watch for 1/2 hour. Watch to see how many people chastise him/her for being poor or a "Bum" or whatever.

We have basically made ourselves self-centered instead of Humanity-centered and it is just getting worse. We haven't faced our demons of Greed or Prejudice.

Think about this next time you see a story about a anonymous donation or a stranger walking up to another person and just handing them X amount of dollars. Why does that story get so much coverage...Now ask yourself this... If we had a kinder society would these stories get the attention they do get?

Just some food for thought.

(Commence the tongue lashings.)

1. My only correction to this is that we have competing values
values that are 180 from each other.

It will not end well.

2. You're wife is right. The Puritans are still messing with us.
They were turned out of their home countries for a reason. :P

3. It is what we deserve, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't fight against it ;) NT
