Ill. GOP gubernatorial candidate OK with schools opting to teach creationism instead of evolution
GOP gubernatorial hopeful Bill Brady said Tuesday he would not stand in the way of a public school board should it want to teach creationism instead of evolution.

“I believe knowledge is power, and I believe local school districts should establish the curriculum when it comes to those things,” Brady told the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board in a wide-ranging interview session with running mate Jason Plummer.

A chunk of the hour-long session delved into social issues, with Brady stating his opposition to laws authorizing civil unions for gays and lesbians and legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, his unwillingness to expand abortion rights and his desire to lift a moratorium on executions.

Brady was asked repeatedly about his personal views on intelligent design.

“My knowledge and my faith leads me to believe in both evolution and creationism,” he said. “I believe God created the earth, and it evolved.” ............(more)

6. This might be the ONE rare instance in which I'd approve of a charter school
which specialized in teaching REAL science to children and kept religion out of the classroom.

7. i'm shaking in my boots here over this guy.
this race has the current governor, who rose to the seat after blaggo was impeached, plus a green candidate who is actually fairly well known, at least in chicago, an independent candidate who won the primary as lt gov, then was forced out of that race because of his history of domestic violence, and, i believe 5 write in candidates (things that make you go hmmm.)
quinn is a truly decent man, a fairly competent administrator, a bit of a flake sometimes, and about as exciting as watching your hair turn gray.
this race is up for grabs. this clown has a real open path to victory. heaven help us. first blaggo and now this.

9. Quinn's doing alright.
I think Brady will not win. He's just too weird. Quinn is boring, yes, and usually, boring is an enormous handicap in a candidate. But in Illinois, especially the Governor's job, just finding someone who seems competent is stunning. I think Quinn will win in November.

Scott Lee Cohen, the independent (domestic violence) candidate, will probably steal a few votes from Quinn; he has a strong ad campaign going. But not enough to matter. And Brady's just too right wing. I'm sure there will be a late media push on both sides; then we'll really know more. Gonna be close, that's for sure.

11. Nothing better exposes
a poor understanding of the constitution than an individual embracing the teaching of creationism in science class. Creationism is mythology. There are many creation myths. Just which of these myths would the government favor? If the government would use the Christian creation myth in school that would demonstrate favoritism - something clearly against the establishment clause. Even more importantly, creationism is not science, not even close. Creationism belongs in Sunday school, not science class. The same applies to intelligent design. Any candidate okay with the teaching of creationism in school is unfit to hold the office of governor.

12. Brady Needs The Fundies...Bad
I'm still not sure I'm believing the recent poll that shows Pat Quinn up by 7 points, but Brady is definitely showing nervous stomache.

The Illinois GOTB has a serious third party problem in both the Governor and Senate races that are eating at the people he needs to get to the polls if he's got a shot of winning. The fundies haven't been real hot on Brady, as well as many teabaggers ever since he said good things about President Obama during the '08 campaign and the "mainstream" party has done precious little for the fundies over the years. Looks like Brady knows he's gotta do something to turn around numbers. If rushpublicans don't come out big for him it will have reprocussions down the ballot.
