Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn stopping the creation of a national Women's History museum
http://www.thefrisky.com/post/246-why-the-u.s.-wont-get-a-national-womens-history-museum/

Two senators are blocking the creation of a women’s history museum in our nation’s capital because they are afraid it will become a shrine to abortion. I wish I was kidding. Sens. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Jim DeMint (R-SC) put a “hold” on a bill that would sell land near the National Mall to build the museum, which would be funded through private donations (including from Meryl Streep, who has pledged $1 million towards it). The senators are claiming that the land isn’t being sold at fair market value (who needs women’s history? Let’s put a Target there!) and that there are already many museums dedicated to the ladies. The Women’s Museum, which is associated with the Smithsonian, is located all the way in Dallas however, and the existing museums in Washington, D.C., focus on niche interests, such as the arts.

The senators true motive, some say, is pressure from an anti-feminist conservative women’s group called Concerned Women for America regarding how the National Women’s History Museum put ideas in people’s heads about reproductive rights. The group sent a letter to both senators earlier this week expressing their concern the museum would “focus on abortion rights without featuring any of the many contributions of the pro-life movement in America.” Oh, please. Does abortion politics have to ruin everything? The museum hasn’t even been built yet. In the mean time, if you visit our nation’s capital you’ll have to console yourself with one of the other museums.

4. If they don't want any mention of abortion
How about a whole section devoted to contraception instead? Margaret Sanger could get a whole wing to herself!

2. Why do people elect these idiots?
Is there any other nation in the western world that would have politicians who can justify stopping a museum that honors the history of women in their nation?

Stop electing religious nutcases, please, my fellow Americans.

7. Because the voters are also religious nutcases
As long as the brain dead morons who are part of the American Taliban, keep voting for clowns like DeMint and Coburn, and as long as there are "women's" groups who keep wanting to give up the rights of other women, this is going to continue to happen.

The best thing is to take away the ability for any senator to put a hold on any bill without just cause.

Our fellow Americans who keep electing religious nuts, are potential traitors, in my opinion.

3. Coburn and DeMint's next move...?
Attempt to repeal the 19th Amendment maybe?

Declare that wives are the property of their husbands?

Mandatory burkhas?

The American Taliban strikes again.

8. It's untoward for them to block this museum. I doubt if
any feminists would try to block forward passage of a National Shithead Hall of Fame, in which Senators DeMint and Coburn rightly would have their own wings.

16. All's well.
Then again, I'm not an incumbent Dem running for re-election this year, so it's easy for me to say that.

18. I'm no longer in California but I'm trying to follow the
gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races there.

Ol' Meg Whitman ought to have learned not to spend all her lunch money up front. She may be one disappointed multi-millionaire on November 3rd.

12. WTF! These assholes thing ENYTHING that involves women MUST
be only about abortion.

Apparently, if you aren't an obedient, conservative, breeding woman then they are absolutely convinced that all you ever do with your life is fuck random men and have monthly abortions. :eyes:

Somebody please smack these asinine men upside the head so hard that their grandchildren will hear their ears ring! :grr:

14. Why would it have to have anything about abortion in it anyway? WTF?
Abortion is always the excuse for misogyny in all its forms. Disgusting.

We're people, not walking wombs fer chrissakes!

17. That's precisely the point, to them.
They've never given a damn about the lives of "the unborn"-if they did, they wouldn't keep cutting programs for children and making it hard for single mothers to work.

The Right is antiabortion because they think that if they succeed in banning abortion, they can force all women back to the gender restrictions of the 1950's-a decade that Republicans think was actually LIKE episodes of "The Donna Reed Show" or "Leave It To Beaver"(a belief that means that no Republican has ever noticed that re-runs of those shows are always described as "comedy" in the TV listings.)
