I was a bit bugged by Rachel Maddow's show tonight
I just wanted to start a non-fire thread :D

But seriously, I did NOT like how she was joking with that college repuke. I did NOT like how she was joking around about being denied access to O'Donnell's campaign office/staffers.

These are serious, deadly serious, issues and we often cede the "seriousness card" to the godawful repukes, who deserve to NEVER be taken seriously. But they behave with this righteous indignation and people with little brains mistake that for dignity or something.

I think we need to back off the lightheartedness somewhat. AND I'm as guilty, if not grossly moreso, than anyone else.

8. Well, Son, don't you think that you should take on other DUers in a Debate...
Before you ply your considerable skills against a nationally renown media figure and a widely celebrated individual here on DU?

So, what would you like to debate about?

Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 12:20 AM by Cleita
pretty much know what they are about. I doubt you even watch her show. She is anything but shallow, but you would know that if you really watched and listened to her. As for out debating her most Republicans are afraid to go on her show anymore because they can't out debate her. Even network colleagues like Chris Matthews and Pat Buchanan don't go on her show anymore because she wipes the floor with them.

Your comments on this thread attest to it and I really don't think you have watched her show. If you did you would see how ridiculous your criticism is. There is some criticism to be aimed at Rachel but yours isn't it.

28. You keep saying that but

when I read the thread it seems to me that the person you are replying to is not really the kind of person that we would want to welcome here at all nor do we want such vapid obvious Republican troll types to enjoy being here or staying here.

If you were more perceptive you would see that launching on an attack of Maddow, perhaps the best educated and most substantive of the hosts on cable TV is just bunk.

These seems to happen every October when the playoffs start and you just get consumed with Baseball.

and I think we both know that most repukes don't have one.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Maddow and usually appreciate her humor. It's just that sometimes it seeems self-defeating.

10. What would you have Rachel do? If she shows serious disapointment
withnot being able to interview Christine or one of her surrogates she's elevating that idiot to a real candidate status! I happen to think making fun of such behavior exemplifies what joke of a candidate the Pubs picked. I'm much more afraid for Reid, Finegold, Boxer and the many other Dems who could lose to one of these idiots.

Think about all the Pub candidates who have hit th news lately. They ALL appear to be completely NUTS!

3. I thought Rachel's show was great! I remember reading a thread
the other day where someone was all upset that shewas going to Del and that she shouldn't waste time on a campaign that is a given Dem. win but go to a State where a Dem really needed help. I didn't agree with that poster then, and still don't. I hink making light hearted comments about O'Donnel is the right way to handle that idiot. She's a joke of a candidate and shouldn't be taken seriously which would justify her candidacy.

the Deer Park Tavern tonight. But I tried.

Sometimes laughter can do more damage to the opposition than mean words, tirades etc. Maddow was nice to everyone today and made Christine and her campaign look like mean little scared mice. I mean really, she was afraid to come face to face with a nice giggly reporter? How the hell does she think she would ever survive in the Senate?

I agree. Taking these people seriously gives their candidacy credibility. They don't even take the idea of government seriously. They don't believe in government, they want to run for office to dismantle government. They are dangerous people but their ideas, their policies, their plans are laughable. Any national candidate that winks her way through a serious debate has already laughed at us and the process.

As for odd-odonal, I heard her commercial played on the Randi Rhodes show today and it was scary how much she sounded like a child. Her voice, her intonation, the subject matter ("I am you") was very odd indeed. Bill Maher was charitable when he said she has "issues" and I'm starting to agree with him. She does not sound all "there."

who is a former Weatherman and played with a band at the bar that Rachel was at tonight, before Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers were invited to play back in the 70's. He was almost killed protesting against the war and is a very interesting character. He insisted I watch Rachel tonight. :-)

19. I think it's possible to be lighthearted while making a serious point...
...The fact that O'Donnell isn't talking to the media at all is serious. Rachel joking around with her producers about being denied access gets that accross, and I suspect someone like O'Donnell would be more annoyed at being laughed at than she would be if she were taken as a Big Serious Threat.

But I do hear what you're saying. They can also use Rachel's lightheartedness against Rachel, I suppose, but I don't know that that helps swing any new voters her way.

21. Rachel as a Journalist has to balance a lot of things. She does
not want to totally anger all Republicans. She uses
humor.

I do not think anyone missed the point that no Republican
from Rachel's campaign would talk to her staff or Rache.

By staying lighthearted herself, if any Republicans
were watching--they realize Rachel was very fair.

23. I LOVE Rachel Maddow but a stunt is a stunt.
The bigger question is WTF is she doing in Delaware giving PR to someone who has to run an ad to say she "is not a witch". That is what scares me and some of my friends. We are worrying about Joe Biden's seat going to a possible self denying witch!!!???

The gap is narrowing in this state. WTF planet are we on?

Democrats of Delaware UNITE and please put this race away, for good, forever and get it out of the eye of the nation so Rachel Maddow can go to Nevada, Washington, Colorado, Wisconsin where there are tight races with semi idiots not TOTAL NUTJOBS.

38. I thought it was a freaking masterpiece from beginning to end, and
can't imagine anyone that would question the approach she used!

Would it have been better if she took a Michael Moore approach? (As an aside, I think MM is a brilliant filmmaker, and does an amazing job given what he's trying to accomplish.) If Rachel had attempted this "storm the castle" tactic, CO'D would then get the chance to piss, moan, and whine while playing the victim card...

45. Righteous indigation and rage are overused as it is
Rachel has her own unique way of bringing attention to the issues. If she chose to rage I'd lose interest. I think she did a great job in interviewing Coons and bringing attention to him. And she also did a great job telling the truth about O'Donnell's lying campaign. For example, I thought she was busy talking to Delawarians only to find out she isn't doing any such thing.

Rachel and her crew are great!
