1. I'm so sorry, but a song with the words "battle," "hymn," and "republic"
just doesn't feel worth the click. It just reeks to me of "wars," "religion," and "republicans". Lastly, "patriotic" has just simply become a bad word in my dictionary because of its having been propagandized so much, mostly by neo-cons.

8. +1
Judy was a wonderful gift to us, as was Orson. We should consider ourselves lucky to be so blessed with their genius and talent.

10. Drunk, drug addicted, tax cheating, child neglecting DIVA. I agree.
I don't stay devoted to actors, actresses, musicians or anyone who trashes themselves and their families with addictions and focus on themselves, not since my brother did the same to his family, his career, and himself.

15. Can't agree with that. The reason my brother started doing heroin was
according to him, he wanted to be a great rock star, and at the time most rock stars were strung out. I think our society is pretty fucked up when a person is perceived as having a "talent" like singing, dancing, sports, etc., they are somehow exempt from the same response that any average, homeless, junkie curled up in a doorway, reeking of months without seeing soap nor mouthcare, eyes rolled back in their heads would receive from us as we hurried past their disgrace. But no, if you have a perceived "talent," then that's all that counts...which I believe is part of the reason these same people like Judy fall into drugs etc, they no longer feel like their whole person matters, just their "talent".

6. This song brings me to tears each & every time.
I remember the night Judy sang this. Our whole family was sobbing.

Thank you for posting this. I totally forgot this, but now I can see the old Zenith & my heart-broken family in my mind's eye. We all hugged afterwards, I think this was our way of coming to terms with our President's sudden & violent death. Maybe this is why this song makes me emotional.

Here we are 47 years later: a forgotten memory as clear as day.

:hi:

20. You haven't had much experience with the Deep South
BHR was originally an abolitionist song, one that was later adapted as a Union marching song. I know that when I was a kid, the old Confederate sympathizers hated that song, nor was it ever sung in a Southern Baptist Church. Union soldiers loved to torment Southerners with that song during Reconstruction.

Times and attitudes might have changed, but for a long while that song was not a uniter, nor was it patriotic for all sides.
