His response to Katrina van den Heuvel to the whole Comey/Ashcroft business was that the "system works...give James Madison some credit."
Screw him - Will, not Madison - this is the way it was during Watergate for you younger readers - when the abuses were exposed, one at a time, the response by the Rethugs was consistently: Well that's over with, let's get on with the important stuff in the Country. The major mistake the Dems made was that when Nixon resigned, the Rethugs said that the long national nightmare was over. No, it wasn't, but they went along with it and that is what gave us Reagan and his minions.
Years ago, I attended a forum where Will was speaking. One of the participants asked him about Roe v. Wade and he said that the Left should calm down, that right now, it's the law of the land presently and it was no big deal. The participant, to her credit, stood back up and demanded that Will explain his carefully parsed use of language, which he repeated. The gal then said that Will was fooling no one and that he was just the vanguard for the future repression of women's right to choose. Will did his patented silence routine, as though by not responding he was winning the argument. She added, right before she sat down, "Sneering is not an argument, sir."
We all cheered her. He just smiled b/c he knew that they would be able to slowly whittle away at all the progress the average citizen has made since Roosevelt, and that all the little protesting would make no difference in the long run. For the RW is smart enough to work slowly and carefully, utilizing small victories and moving inexorably up the mountain. What we have to do as progressives, is cut that rope a la Stallone and watch them plummet into the ideological crevasse.
