Dad: School allowed boy to make mask that looks like Ku Klux Klan hood
Posted: 10:27 AM

FORT SCOTT, Kansas - A first-grade art project has two parents so upset that they are moving their son to another school in another city.

Monday, Dallas Smith, 6, came home wearing a white, cone-shaped mask he made in art class at Winfield-Scott Elementary in Fort Scott, Kan.

“It appears to look like a Ku Klux Klan hat, which is a heck of a thing to put on a six-year-old boy,” said Barry Smith, Dallas’ father.

It was part of a project done in Russ Gordon’s art class.

“That was never, never the purpose of the project,” Gordon said, referring to Smith’s description of Dallas’ hat.

To Gordon, art is eye candy. He uses it to teach the principals of shape, symmetry and texture. Monday’s project was supposed to do just that.

3. "Safer"??!? Good grief.
"Still, Smith and his wife are moving their son to a school in Pittsburg, Kansas. They believe administrators in Fort Scott need sensitivity training. Until then, the Smiths believe their son is safer in another environment."

Talk about overreaction. The kid wants to be a knight in shining armor, and the parents yank him out of school.

7. I don't remember ever having my art teacher allow or forbid my art projects.
I remember once we were making hand trace turkeys and I decided to trace my middle finger instead of an open palm.

In so many classes the kid has to conform, art isn't about that.

8. Hmmm.
Well, to begin with, this is kids doing art. They don't understand the political significance of some symbols and some people might give them a little bit of leeway when they run into things that resemble taboo subjects. I think it's alright to protect six-year-olds from such ideas and just avoid the subject, just as I think such moments could be teachable ones. I don't see there being a morally correct answer here when the kid isn't intending to create a symbol of hate.

Further, the hat has coloring on it and a large hole for the kids face. It's not much of a Klan hat, by "Klan hat standards." It's more of just something he made in a first-grade art class.

On the other hand, maybe the kid has a ironic sense of humor, like Dave Chappelle

though I doubt it. ;)

9. There are quite a few images from films and video games which could have inspired such a mask:
It's possible that neither the child nor the school considered the Klan.

....just a thought.

13. how does that kid feel now?
That is a pretty cool mask/hat/helmet and I bet he was proud of it until his parent(s) hit the roof.
He should have been running around the house with it on in some childhood adventure, but now
he has been yanked away from friends and put into a new school.
Yep, the parents are doing this for him, uh huh.
