Teachers union to spend $15M to protect vulnerable Dems

By SCOTT WONG | 10/6/10 12:35 PM EDT Updated: 10/6/10 3:16 PM EDT

The National Education Association, the country’s largest labor union, said Wednesday it will spend $15 million on independent television and radio ads to help re-elect a handful of public-education-minded Democrats facing tough races this fall.

The first TV ads began airing Wednesday in the Phoenix market, where Rep. Harry Mitchell of Arizona, a former high school history teacher, is running against former state lawmaker David Schweikert. The ad never mentions Mitchell; instead it paints his Republican opponent as a foe of public schools, teachers and students.

“Schweikert opposed funding to keep thousands of Arizona teachers in the classroom. Schweikert would abolish the Department of Education, crippling our public schools. And Schweikert even opposed college aid for middle-class families,” a narrator intones in the ad. “David Schweikert. Wrong for our schools; wrong for Arizona.”

The NEA’s $15 million program is only the latest big 2010 campaign-spending development driven by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling earlier this year, which tossed aside restrictions on how corporations and other groups can spend money to influence elections.

3. DLC to spend $15M to destroy teacher unions
Yeah, I know. But I bet it's not far off.

4. I imagine if this union thought that, they wouldn't be
helping so much. PS Start your own negative thread; this isn't it.

5. Sorry to sour your happy pills.
Teachers want to make things better. They've been dumped on before by the very people they are trying to help.

Partial truth posts don't really help, you know.

8. What's partial about this truth? They're heavily supporting Dems.
So sorry you want to poop on good news.

9. Look.
I'm all in favor of happy talk. Ignoring the seamier side of politics is a nice way to go. I'm also very happy that the teachers found 15 candidates who support public education.

The whole truth is just as I portrayed it. DLC is going after teacher unions. I'm glad the teachers found some who weren't. I'm not so glad that the DLC will be after those 15 to support them in their attempt to implement ronald reagan's dream for American schools. But as I said, teachers have been feeding the hands that slap them for years. We know that Democrats are usually better for educational issues than republicans. So we support them. Just wish it were reciprocal.

But I'll let your thread be. It's a nice pleasant evening here. I'm going for a walk and not think about politics. You go ahead and do the same here.

10. I'm just one guy
who owns a struggling small business. We work our butts off for what little we make. Rest assured though that both me and my wife have dug as deep as we can, $25 at a time, to contribute to the DNC, DSCC, DCCC, and OFA. Please do the same.

11. Thank you for doing that!
I really wish I could do the same, sadly I am currently unemployed and just making it on unemployment. I have to make my contribution through my work in the trenches.
