Why the Republican ads on DU?
Every time I log on to DU, I have to put up with Republican campaign ads.

WHY? I thought this was a Democratic site!!!!!

FYI, the domain owner has complete control over what ads run on DU, in case you want to make lame excuses.

2. I believe that the ads will be pulled if you complain...
However, if you buy a star, you can block them.

8. Why don't you want Republicans to waste their money running ads on DU? . . .
Do you want them to place their ads instead somewhere that will be more effective for them?

11. It does not say they are Republicans, for one reason.
It gives the false impression they are Dems, and for free practically if noone clicks thru.

10. Time to spend some quality time with your "hosts" file
If you can figure out the address of the ad (usually an ad is an image file, like a gif or a jpeg), you can modify your "hosts" file to redirect your browser to look on your hard drive for the ad. And since your hard drive doesn't have the ad source on it, you get a blank page or an "unable to find address" error message.

It's harder to find the base address for a Flash type of ad; you have to look at the source code and try to figure out which URL is sending the ad to your computer.

ad.doubleclick.net and googlesyndication.com are two of the big ones.

I've added these to my "hosts" file; the 127.0.0.1 number is the URL for your local hard drive.

15. excellent idea!
i run linux so i put your hosts file in /etc/dahosts and merely execute "cat /etc/dahosts >>/etc/hosts"

incidentally, often viruses often touch your hosts file so your antivirus proggie can't do updates. good thing to keep an eye on.

12. DU has to make money somehow
Why not at the expense of Repukes?

If you have a little extra $ on hand, you can always donate, and the ads disappear for a year.

17. "Lame excuses"?
Google ads are auto-generated and based on keywords and if you don't know what that means, then take the time to learn what it means before you go off laying blame where it doesn't belong.

25. Yes, you can block ads
But, while you can block certain sites and words beforehand, you simply cannot anticipate new sites and new bids on keywords that are made from Google Adwords - the buyer's side of Google Advertising.

DU is a high-tier site and attracts traffic from people who can afford to bid on innocuous keywords like "congress", "elections", "pregnancy", etc, as well as purchase network blocks of static ads on high-traffic sites. In other words, the people you think you're "blocking" aren't even trying to get your traffic.

Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 11:23 PM by realisticphish
they can ban specific ads, but its not like adsense (assuming it's adsense) screens all their ads past Skinner and Elad.

and anyway, who gives a shit? I'm certainly not changing my mind based on them, so what's the problem with right wing money landing in DU's pockets?

Plus, I haven't seen ads here for years, since I pay 5-10 bucks once every June

27. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they paid for them.
If you don't like seeing them, don't look at them.

You're entitled to read the site for free. You're not entitled to tell the site how to sell ad space, and rightly so.

28. You are out on a limb, because they are click-thru ads
They only pay if you click them, and then only a few cents.

Mostly, they give the false impression they are DEMS
and then people may vote for name recognition.
This is the tactic that concerns me, plus

I'M VERY TIRED OF SEEING DUDLEY'S FACE.

The ads target the audience, so in Oregon, you see Dudley, the Republican candidate for governor.
This is a very close race.
Remember what happened in WA? A few votes decided the race.
