DISH Network drops FOX
DISH Network drops FOX
by Pinto Pony
Thu Oct 07, 2010 at 05:55:15 AM PDT

The FX channel suddenly disappeared from our Dish Network, and inquiring minds wanted to know why. We wrote to the Dish Network management and here is their reply.

Dear Valued DISH Network Customer,

Thank you for your recent communication regarding your channel.

We regret that FOX Networks, the owner of some Regional Sports Networks, FX and National Geographic Channel, removed their channels from the DISH Network line-up. FOX has demanded a rate increase of more than 50%. An increase this large would force DISH Network to pass these costs on to our customers, which we are unwilling to do during these tough economic times.
We know these channels are important to you which is why during the FOX Sports lock-out, we're pleased to bring you 20 additional sports channels at no cost. We assure you that we are doing everything possible to restore these channels. In the meantime, you will not miss a single MLB playoff game or NFL Game. The Solutions Tab has a full list of alternative sports options available to you while we continue to negotiate with FOX.
DISH Network will continue to work tirelessly for a fair agreement in order to bring these channels back at the earliest possible time. Feel free to share your thoughts and concerns by e-mailing us at president@dishnetwork.com. We assure you that we will read every e-mail we receive.Thank you for your patience during this process and for being a valued DISH Network customer.
Sincerely,
DISH Network

Which means no Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, USC, UCLA, Kings, Ducks, you name it. Plus I cant watch new epidodes of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia or Sons Of Anarchy. Fuck Fox. :argh:

98. This isn’t a first...
about a week ago they cut MSG and MSG+, because the company that owns those channels wanted Dish to carry some other crappy channel in addition. So, dish said fuck you, and dropped MSG.

(MSG is the sports network here in New York that carries the Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Big East conference college football games; so I no longer get any of my sports, because of those greedy corporate bastards)

carries it. But it is unfiltered and it is straight news just like the old days of news. I don't like Dish. I got it for my son. He has it on a special. As soon as the year ends I will remove it. We have directtv. I love it especially their customer service.

and I got rid of that in the early part of the century, during the *co years. Dish carries both FSTV and Link in addition to many more channels than Direct. My sweetie's going to miss Nat Geo and FX.

42. DIrecTV is not owned by Murdoch
Murdoch's News Corp bought DirecTV from Hughes COmmunications (a division of GM) in 2003. In 2008, News Corp sold its interest in DirecTV to Liberty Media in exchange for Liberty's shares in News Corp.

We got flat screen computer monitors, the pictures are much clearer than on the old tv screens, and there rarely is anything in tv we cannot find via the net.
So, selling tvs, cutting the DISH service is our next step.

80. We had big satellite which closes down for good in December. I
love movies, so I was disappointed until I heard about Roku.

We checked, and we receive ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, 4 PBS, This TV, CW, Weather Channel (local) and My Network over the air. With Roku, for 8.99, I can get Netflix and streaming Starz, plus a load of podcasts, Democracy Now, Maddow, Olberman, Music, almost everything I can possibly watch on my TV. It's great.

Just to let you know.

The 8.99/month the previous poster was talking about is the Netflix subscription you need. I absolutely love Roku and Netflix and have gotten rid of all other pay TV since using them. You don't even need a Roku box to watch Netflix on your TV --- PS3, XBox, Wii, and Apple TV will work as well.

From what I know about them, their senior management gives to both repubs and Democrats. Like a lot of regulated industries, they keep on the 'good side" of both parties. So, for example, Malone gives mostly to repubs, but also has donated to Inouye, Kerry, Rockefeller. Other members of senior management, like the Senior VP, give almost exclusively to Democrats. And I think all of them have donated to Bennett. The same is true, I might add, for Dish. Ergen gives more to Democrats than to repubs, but he's given to grassley, mccain, kyl, etc. as well.

I've seen little indication that any of these folks are particularly partisan or ideological. All they really care about is making money.

I've had both services and it's pretty much a toss up as to what they offer and the quality of their service. I figure any time I want to change or upgrade my equipment, I can play them off against each other and go with the best deal. Most recently that was DirecTV so that is what I have now. Last time it was DISH so I had it for about five years.

18. DirecTV
Their phone service (located in Idaho) is pretty damn good. The problem with DirecTV is that all of their local work (installation, maintenance, repairs) are done by contractors who vary from decent to abysmal. When I call to complain, I get a lot of empathy from the call center and they try to get things fixed. One time they got so fed up, they gave me the personal cell phone of the local contract owner/supervisor and I bugged him personally until he got a decent tech (who spoke English) out to fix the problem.

46. Here is a short cut to those telephone menu problems:
this page is for DISH, but the site provides shortcuts to most companies.

http://www.get2human.com/get2human_list.asp

and, once you get an unintelligible person on the line at DISH, you can ask to be switched to someone in the USA. they have done that for me ( I always pretend I am deaf and old, works every time)

47. I am considering dropping DISH
Several years ago, I had a flaky DVR that would stop working until you rebooted it.

After the third time it did so, I called and requested a replacement box, since a DVR that stops is not reliable-enough. They tried to convince me that since it was working AT THE MOMENT, they could not replace it, and was there "anything else we can do to continue to provide you with excellent service." I had to argue my way up three levels of management, threatening to cancel and fight them on the termination fee in court if necessary, before they replaced the box.

For the last couple of years since then, it has been OK, except for the fact that they keep SPAMMING my DVR with unwanted promos for other options. At times, the tuner has changed channels in order to record this advertising. And my emails asking for them to turn it off have gone unanswered.

I think there is FIOS in my future.

39. Where does it say that Murdoch owns DirecTV?
I just checked Value Line and if one corporation or individual has a large block of stock, they note it. For instance, Charles Ergan owns 51.3% of Dish Network stock. He also owns 46.3% of Echo Star stock. Someone named John Malone owns 100% of DirecTV Class "B" stock. DirecTV used to be Hughes Electronics and was 100% owned by General Motors. General Motors spun Hughes off to their shareholders as a "tracking stock" in 2003 and it apparently is very widely held. If Murdoch or Murdoch interests owned a large block of Class "A" DirecTV stock, Value Line would have noted that.

and took the poster's word. John Malone...he used to be Liberty Media...a little turd. Does Value Line list large shareholders?

Dish didn't come into being via 'old boys network.' Maybe that's why they want to stick 'em.

53. John Malone
At one time, Murdoch owned some of Hughes Electronics/DirecTV. Liberty Media/Malone owned a chunk of NewsCorp. Murdoch wanted to solidify his hold on NewsCorp and traded his DirecTV shares to Malone for the Liberty Media shares of NewsCorp. As a result, Murdoch is totally out of DirecTV.

Value Line does show any significant shareholders in the corporations they cover.

62. I've Had DISH For Over 11 Years, I Think, A Long Time Anyway & I've
never had any customer service problems with them. They have always been courteous to us and just last year moved our "dish" from one side of our house to the other because of tree interference. When they did so they gave us an HD upgrade for FREE since we have been long time customers. When we had 5 hurricanes in 2005, we NEVER lost service, even though our local channels did.

I just got this month's bill out and was getting ready to call them because NOW the closest local station is getting dropped. I wanted to find out what they are planning to do because I will probably have to switch to Verizon. My husband is really upset because he WANTS his sports channels. TBS is covering the Rays games right now, but if they keep dropping channels we won't have a choice. AND I'M NOT PAYING MORE MONEY either!

We have all the channels because my husband likes his sports AND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, which now have been compromised! While I don't know all the particulars, I think it's FOX who is trying to SCREW us and not necessarily DISH. But I don't know! I don't see how DISH can expect us to pay more FOR LESS!

Still, I'm going to call right now because I intended to do so anyway! Sure don't want Comcast because I had them before and now my INTERNET is with Verizon. So we will have to use Verizon if we switch.

This country just keeps SCREWING us over each and every day and I've really had ENOUGH! Wish I could get my husband "unhooked" but he works hard and the TV is about all he has. We rarely ever go out to eat, we don't travel and he works very hard. He's can fix just about anything so that saves us money, so TV he can have! The economy has prevented us from doing much of anything so I don't complain. I cook dinner every night and we stay home unless we go somewhere that's FREE!

That's life in "my little America these days! And now THIS!!

I'm living an American Dream called "Trying To Keep My Head Above Water!" And it's one I'm sure so many, many more are living too!

And to top it off... I live in Florida and am having NIGHTMARES about RUBIO!! Just shoot me!

72. I read that Fox wants to
charge Dish a 50% increase for their stations. Dish doesn't want to accept that because then they would have to raise rates on its customers. I so detest Fox and Murdoch so much. Greedy, soulless man.

I, too, rarely go out. My big treat is a 99 cent Fresco Bean Burrito from Taco Bell....very filling and gives me some fiber.

I did go to a matinee today for only $4.75...saw 'Wall Street.' Very good...shows how their greed works.

I hope Dish can negotiate a fair deal w/ Fox and Murdoch. Supposedly they are offering a ton of free Sports Channels to you....call and check it out.

THEY, DISH are NOT happy with what is going on and are FULLY aware that they will lose A LOT of business if they can't get a good agreement. I told them that I already have a contract with Verizon and WILL switch if my rates go up and wanted to know how much time I had to give THEM before I switched.

I then got connected to another Representative who offered us Pay-Per-View coupons! She told me they were negotiating because DISH felt a 50% increase would in affect ensure people dropping them. She was also pushing Discovery channel in the meantime too. Since we have been long time customers, over 10 years they DIDN'T want me to make any decisions at this time and said they have been getting calls around the clock. I actually told her that it seems to me that Rupert Murdoch seems to want to take this country over and "monopolies" aren't something I want to be a part of. I could say more, but the bottom line is that I will wait to see what will happen after the negotiations, but considering that I have "no contract" agreement to uphold I would have to switch if my rates were increased. I also suggested to her that she might want to make a suggestion to the "higher ups" that perhaps a deal be given to the LOYAL customers who have NEVER been late on their payments and have been long time customers. That we be given some consideration that our rates NOT be increased REGARDLESS!

More was said, but I do want to make this comment. Whether it's DISH, VERIZON, COMCAST, HUGHES NET or any other TV cable service, "we the people" are at their mercy. If it's not Murdoch it's someone else who is pulling the strings, although Murdoch is the "snake of all snakes" IMO! The only leverage any of us has is to say "we no longer want your service," but switching to another company may very well bring the same problems. But I have no problem making my case about getting some sort of bargain.

Given that we've been with them for over 10 years has afforded us "some" perks. I think I mentioned them moving our DISH and giving us HD without any increase in rates. Also, we got an extra box at that time too, so I don't think they want us to leave. This is leverage I won't have if I switch, so perhaps they will be willing to work something out with us. I can only make my case to them and see what happens. We'll wait to see what happens, but we're paying a lot now and more isn't on the table for us. As with so many here in this country, we've tightened our belts so we can keep "some" things we want.

I see that some here can't stand DISH, but until this time we have yet to have ANY problem with them and all service we've needed has ALWAYS been prompt and courteous. Unfortunately, America has been taken over and hijacked by the MONIED people and we've gone back to what it was like when the Robber Barons ruled. However, there are more millions of people and there is far too much APATHY. That's how I see it.

90. When I had Dish, I used
to watch Link TV and Free Speech TV....I really miss them.

When I move, I'll be sure to get The Dish...I'm stuck right now with Insight....the worst of all cable cos. They only serve a very small part of the country (western KY, one town in Indiana and Columbus, OH), however their headquarters is in NYC!!!! So the NYC salaries and rent are high and us hicks in 'flyover USA' get to pay them.

And there is currently no competition so I'm stuck...but I'll be moving soon. I need to get into the country and put some distance between me and so many people.

Our current Robber Barons make the last ones look rather kind! You can practically smell the Greed and the disgust with which they treat 'the little people.'

I think the problem is that there is NO OVERSIGHT/REGULATING agency to turn to for help!!

People would probably be glad to speak up if they had someone to speak up TO, who they knew would fight on their behalf.

We need Better Business Bureau on STEROIDS, and federally funded, non--partisan. Or something!!!!!

11. This will get worse. Cablevision has already dropped...
Food Network for a while over rates, and had a huge fight a few years ago with Steinbrenner over rates for the Yankees network. Now I'm seeing mumblings about Cablevision dropping Fox channels.

The channels need outlets and the cable and satellite companies need content-- but, with all this consolidation there's not so much difference between them any more. And we're the losers.

Many of them may have signed up for Dish with part of the reason being the shows they enjoyed on Fox stations. Now they're probably stuck with 1.5 years left to go in their contract without the shows they were wanting to watch to begin with.

22. Dish is cheaper than DirectTV for the same channels, but you don't need either one.
In our area it is cheaper than a comparable cable package too.

But we are back to free TV after 25 years of having either a cable or satellite monthly bill, and it is great! We save $52 a month. Bought a little outdoor antenna for $46 and stuck it on the side of the house (RCA brand from Amazon.com) and ran a wire into the basement and up to the two TVs. Then got a Tivo which streams Netflix and YouTube and other stuff to our TV as well as records stuff we want off the air. We have more movies and TV series/documentaries than we can watch in our Instant View list.

For news, I watch network or PBS/BBC. We also have an XM radio subscription, and that is where I go for political news/discussion. POTUS is a great channel, carrying live speeches and press briefings, and I can also get CNN and MSNBC on XM radio. The monthly fee is much less than a cable bill--and we had it while we had the Dish anyway. The Tivo box we own outright, and have also bought the lifetime service package, both costing about as much as one year of Dish fees. (Our investment in the newest Tivo box with a lifetime service plan was $700; so far since May we have saved $260 on DishTV bills.) But if you don't want to invest that much up front, you can just buy the Tivo box for $299 and then subscribe to the service plan for a year at a time at a rate of about $8 a month--still way cheaper.

142. My Son Lives In The Country & HATES HughesNet! Says It Has THE WORST
internet connection EVER! We can ALL go back & forth about WHICH is better than another, but in the end, we ALL have to make certain choices about what to do for ourselves!

We are very longtime DISH users and I've NEVER had problems with them! Do I like what's happening? NO! But switching will cost me money and DISH says they are trying to negotiate because they don't want to lose business. I'm SURE they're aware how MUCH business they'll lose, so I'm waiting it out.

In the end, we may have to switch to something, but living where I do I wonder if switching won't just bring another set of problems. I don't own a upgraded PC, and can't afford to buy the a new one either. Plus, I'm "techie" challenged and don't even know HOW to connect my PC to my TV!

So since, we as a family do nothing unless it's free outside of our home, TV is just about our only recreational outlet! I haven't gone to a movie in YEARS & YEARS! We don't eat out nor have we taken trips unless needed or someone else pays. Which isn't something that happens you know.

However, I WAS LUCKY about a year and a half ago and someone DID pay for me to go to San Francisco, which I throughly enjoyed!

147. It's easy to go over the limit if you download a lot of TV programs.
I can do about an hour (Olbermann) with no problems. Two hours (+Maddow) would set me over the limit. Hughes has a period every day from 11PM-4AM Pacific time with no limits, so I can start my big downloads before bed. I do software updates on weekends but still have to check the sizes before starting.

IIRC, they say the limit is 200MB/day, but they don't seem to cut me off until I hit 300MB/day. Then they slow you down to below dialup speed (25 bits/second!) for 24 hours. It's like I was a child getting a time out. Infuriating. They call it the "Fair Access Policy."

Even without the FAP slowdown, I've noticed download speeds slow quite a bit during peak hours (evenings, Pacific time), but pick up as people on the east coast go to bed. Things like streaming video get choppy around dinner time (I have to pause it while it buffers), but in the late evening it's fine again.

There's DSL near me, but I'm about a mile outside the radius.

be worked out fairly quickly and all Fox Programs will be back on Dish. Dish cannot afford to leave Fox off from their lineup for long.

Just FX, Nat Geo, and the FOX owned FSN networks are the channels that will be lost. Other channels including Fox News are covered by a separate contract and they will remain on the air.

Besides, when I was still a TV addict, I blocked every fox cable station. If it can be done, it is. Cable providers can and I think do pick up on this and figure it into their costs for the next contract. Boycott anything fox. You only have yourself to thank.

101. Too bad they didn't include Faux News too.
If Faux News finally got dropped from DISH and other cable too, how would the 'baggers know what to think or feel?

102. The best solution is to drop cable and watch what you want on the internet
Edited on Thu Oct-07-10 08:27 PM by slay
fuck them all. we don't NEED any of them. the internet is better anyways with most shows having very limited short commercials. netflix everything else. you can still have tons of options without cable/dishtv using just the internet/netflix.

and then there's the internet underground where just about anything can be found.

129. Another option is OTA antenna + TIVO.
Now it isn't free but good attic mounted antenna will run you $70 - $80. Some good quad shield cable maybe another $20. TIVO runs about $200 and lifetime subscription another $200. So $500 (less than 1 year of cable or sat) and flawless 1080 HD picture (higher quality than cable OR sat which use more compression to fit more channels in same bandwidth).

This is the wheeling and dealing FOX always does with cable/sat. providers. They'll come to an agreement.

131. Yeah because ESPN which demands more cash every year is doing sooo bad.
You are aware this has nothing to do w/ Fox, Fox News, or Fox business right?

Sports are big and sports fans are likely to demand Dish to restore channels.

Fox networks is bundling FX, Nat Geo with Fox Sports Network. Likely Dish will blink. Sports fans are the backbone of cable/sat.

136. separate contract
Not all of the fox channels are covered by a single contract. There are multiple contracts covering different services. Fox News is a separate agreement from the channels involved in the current dispute. And, no, Fox News is not given away for free. Its actually one of the more expensive channels.

120. Oh, let's be accurate here and if DISH had a spine it'd drop FauxNews, but won't...
DISH only dropped FX and some other minor stuff. There is no way that DISH would have the guts to dump FauxNews. Too many FAUX viewers would cancel their DISH and DISH knows it.

135. dish can't cancel foxnews because it has a current contract to carry it
The reason the other fox channels are off dish is that the current agreement for those particular channels expired without a new agreement or an extension of the old one

124. These games of 'chicken' have been going on all over the country
for quite some time now. My folks had it happen with ABC about a year ago out in the Portland, Oregon market, at least I was able to set up a digital antenna and converter box in the den so Mom could watch her college football.

It's a sign of the times, people are dropping expensive cable/satellite packages, or they're threatening to switch much more than they used to, it's put a squeeze on signal providers, and they can't raise rates like they used to. Maybe there will be some consolidations and some firms that flat go out of business before this whole thing shakes out.

Cutthroat competition among signal providers is a good thing for consumers in a healthy economy, but in a lousy one, there are simply throats getting cut.

132. All the more reason to switch to Dish Network
They have more HD than the competitors anyway (true HD that is, not channels that claim to be HD but broadcast in SD 75% of the time).

So, if you're shopping for a new TV service, check them out. Show FOX/Murdock/Saudi Arabia what you think of their networks!
