ROFLMAO !!! - X-Rating For The Bible ???
<snip>

HONG KONG (Reuters) - More than 800 Hong Kong residents have called on authorities to reclassify the Bible as "indecent" due to its sexual and violent content, following an uproar over a sex column in a university student journal.

A spokesperson for Hong Kong's Television and Entertainment Licensing authority (TELA) said it had received 838 complaints about the Bible by noon Wednesday.

The complaints follow the launch of an anonymous Web site -- www.truthbible.net -- which said the holy book "made one tremble" given its sexual and violent content, including rape and incest.

The Web site said the Bible's sexual content "far exceeds" that of a recent sex column published in the Chinese University's "Student Press" magazine, which had asked readers whether they'd ever fantasized about incest or bestiality.

That column was later deemed "indecent" by the Obscene Articles Tribunal, sparking a storm of debate about social morality and freedom of speech. Student editors of the journal defended it, saying open sexual debate was a basic right.

If the Bible is similarly classified as "indecent" by authorities, only those over 18 could buy the holy book and it would need to be sealed in a wrapper with a statutory warning notice.

15. Actually, the Bible is a very rewarding literary
experience. Just because you may not believe in the fanatical worship of its starring characters doesn't mean that it is not a very good piece of literature sprinkled with a copious amount of historical fact that in its own right is very fascinating and insightful.

6. Hehe.. I was watching Ebert and Roeper yesterday..
Edited on Sun May-20-07 01:40 PM by tridim
and they were talking about a great new film that got an "R" rating because of a few F-words. Both hosts agreed that the film SHOULD be viewed by kids because it would make them better people. They ended the segment by saying, "Sneak in to the theater kids". :)

Edit: The movie is called "Once" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/ It's only in limited release, so I haven't seen it yet.

9. Not to mention the violence.
In one scene, a woman is raped by men from another tribe. The woman's husband cuts her body into pieces and sends it to the other tribes, asking for their help in avenging her death.

In another scene, God commands soldiers to put everyone to death - women, children and animals included. To quote Ahnold, "They were really bad."

Then there's the descriptions of hell, where people are tormented forever, in full view of those really trying to enjoy heaven. Maybe they'll have those Bose sound cancelers that Randi hawks?

I could go on and on. . .

11. Ezekiel 23:20
http://bible.cc/ezekiel/23-20.htm

The translated verse of every Bible version is present. Some are more... upfront than others.

No wonder some people criticize the Bible. Half the people can't translate it right; those that do have some hang-ups over straight sexuality... others warp it just to scapegoat; everyone knows Sodom and Gomorrah was about greed and not homosexuality. As if I care about such distinctions, but it is the truth.

13. The OT is stuffed fulla "indecent" content... it deserves a XXX rating...
...by just about any standards I can think of.

The NT, OTOH, is not terribly problematic. If they blacklist the OT, I foresee a boom for publishers in putting out brand-new editions of the NT alone.

Could be interesting. VERY interesting. Wonder if we could get them to do that here? Whatever would fundie nutjobs do without their beloved OT and all the primitive "rules"?

speculatively,
Bright

14. Wonder if anyone ever sued a library because such offensive material
was out on the shelves where kids could get it? Like the fundie who is suing because his teenage sons found a book that talked about lesbians and it caused them sleepless nights so he's suing for $20K. Maybe we should gather up some money and sue the same library to put the Bible in an off limits area - I mean, <i>someone has to think of the children</i>

19. The Book of Judges is Especially Horrifying
Gang rape and murder, incest, human sacrifice, assassination, revenge, as well as off-the-wall things like talking animals. My favorite is the story of Tamar, who dressed as a prostitute and had sex with her father in disguise.

It's amazing what people can overlook when something has a halo around it. If it belonged to any other religion, the Bible would be condemned and burned by the right.

21. Interesting, and does the Koran have so much violence in it?
For all we hear that the Muslims are so "violent" one wonders - the Koran doesn't seem to have so many stories in it, per se, and it's much shorter. Does it have much sex in it? LOL, teenagers wouldn't read it anyway!

30. That book is violent!
I started reading it to my kids when they were little. I decided that was a bad idea when I got to the part where Abraham was supposed to sacrifice his son. As if sacrificing him weren't bad enough, he had the kid carry the firewood that he was going to use to burn him to the top of the mountain. Turned out God was just testing Abraham's faith. That God, he is such a prankster! But there was no way in hell I wanted my kids to believe in a sicko god like that. Not to mention if God is supposed to be all knowing, why would he have had to test Abraham? Wouldn't he already know if he had faith?

31. the "righteous" Lot offering his virgin daughters up to perverts
was one story that made my eyes boggle when I was switched from the cute "Children's Bible" to the real thing. What a plot for a porn movie. Also loved Samson giving thousands of Philistine foreskins to his father-in-law as a dowry.

32. The Bible I was reading
to my kids was a "cute" children's bible with little comic book type pictures to go with the stories. One of the pictures is a picture of Abraham's son carrying the sticks that would be used to burn him, on his back. While Abraham is walking ahead carrying the pot of hot coals to light them and the knife that he is going to kill the boy with. Another picture shows Abraham with the knife raised over his son ready to stab him. It was disgustingly violent. Why would anybody want their children to think that if there is a god he/she is like that? I still have that "cute" bible for argument purposes.
