White Separatist on Reddit

If you're familiar with Reddit, you know it's a fairly liberal (if a bit immature) community. There's a section called IAmA, in which you can say what you are (a doctor, a convicted criminal, etc.) and people can ask questions they've always wanted answers to.

Today there's a post from a White Separatist who claims to have been fairly liberal, and college educated, and that he decided by intellectual analysis that whites would be better off in their own homeland. He seems convinced that white communities would be crime free.

2. When Digg's right-wing trolls were exposed

a bunch of them flew over to Reddit and have stayed. I have noticed a big change in voting patterns which reflects this.

The post is someone's idea of coming clean with their feelings about their "racial awakening". I don't think so.

My advice is to courtesy flush this piece of shit piece link to an even shittier message board down the fucking drain.

I had no knowledge of reddit, but I can tell you this... I have no desire to post at reddit AS A DIRECT RESULT of reading one person's lame opportunity to instigate hatred and bigotry.

If he were representative of the Reddit community, it would not have been worth noting.

6. His post stands for a reason

Not only does the site encourage free expression, but one of the admins urged people not to downvote the guy just because they did not like his message.

While I understand that this would not fly on DU, due to forum rules, other messageboards are much more liberal about allowing expression of unpopular views. The whole point of the IAmA board is to gain insight into other people's thoughts, not to censor them.

Look at the new Rachel Maddow video on the DU video forum. She's urging conservatives and Tea Partiers to come to her show and state their views. That doesn't mean that her show is right wing, just because she allows both sides to be heard.

10. There is a difference with the example you used...

While Rachel Maddow would allow anyone on her show, she would moderate and ask the hard questions. On the other hand, that person's-long-in-the-tooth explanation didn't beg a question. It was a confession. Big deal. There are lots of people who confess prejudice. Now, if you want to understand why you feel this way or that way, it invites intellectual conquest.

Instead, what we have on that website is a long building history of why the poster decided to become a white separatist. That's it. There's no dialogue, just his monologue. You're left with either believing in it (as many might) or feeling like I do, which was that it was a waste of time because there is nothing to intellectially reason.

Beyond what you see when a page loads, you can scroll, and often see much more. The guy was questioned at length. Did you really see "no dialog?"

Let's just agree that we disagree about the quality of that site's "discussion". It's like walking into a friend's house who makes no bones about the fact that their house runs on its' own. Pretty soon, I find I'd rather be somewhere else.
