Case in point - how is S Dakota doing on the government pork train since they dumped Tom Daschle? Is S Dak really better off with Thune than they were with Daschle?

You will remember that, when Daschle was Senator, Junior Bush was President. There was a Pentagon spending review, and it came out that Elsworth AFB (outside of Rapid City) would close. It became pretty clear, pretty quickly that, if Thune was emected, he and his buddy, the President, would keep the base open.
