Okay, I'm about to do a test run. I can't just sit here anymore.
A few months back I put up a post about nearly being homeless, and looking to take my extensive and unusual photography equipment and myself on the road. Right after that I got a job with the Census Bureau for about three weeks which kept me from going. Then I got another job, but that asshole after 4 weeks was clearly in no position to actually pay anyone, since I was his office manager/accountant, when I say it was clear, I mean it was clear. So we parted ways, nonetheless still delayed my going drive-about.

Well, I'm going on a test run, starting next week. I have a friend from CA that is going to a convention in Las Vegas, I'll meet him there, taking a few days to get there, then down to his place in CA. I built his website and he has new product so I'll spend a couple of days revamping his site, getting him new photography, etc. During that time I will live in his backyard in my utility trailer to test whether or not I have everything I need to be drive-about. Not that he hasn't offered his home to me, but I need the test. After that I will return here, taking a few days to traverse up through northern CA and Oregon, to get anything I missed thinking the need of, and to return things I didn't really need and took up too much space.

Then I'll be heading out and about. Though my equipment is unique and imo exciting, right now very few will pay for professional photography or videography, particularly from someone like me who is a technical rather than artistic photographer. So my thought then and now, is to travel the US and record for posterity a lot of the anguish and homelessness and so on. Back when I first posted this idea I had only photography, since then I have organized a set up to do videography, which doesn't seem like much till you realize that the unique thing about my set up is that I use a 50' mast allowing me to be well out of the way, and after set up, generally not noticed much. So I capture a reality that is sometimes missed from ground level when people know they are being recorded.

Yesterday, my wonderful neighbors helped me put a captain's bed in my small utility trailer. Fortunately my actual equipment needed the 5'x8' trailer because the mast when collapsed is still 8' long, but it takes up almost no room at all side-to-side or up-n-down. Today and thru the weekend, I'll be loading the drawers and the trunk of my car with things I think I'll need to survive living on the road for an extended time. I have no doubt I'll make some mistakes in those choices, hence the test run.

I am nearly completely broke, actually I'm going to have to file bankruptcy because what little I have left was actually taken from a credit card account. My daughter has transferred my cell to her billing, which is costs $10 instead of $60 and has agreed to pay that for me. Otherwise all I have left will go to gas and raw food, ie not restaurants or fast food. I will likely be traveling with a very large, but very sweet dog. I say likely, because he is part of this test. I don't know if he will really behave and tolerate this as well I hope. If he doesn't there's someone here who loves him and will take him.

So, just like last time I thought I was about to go drive-about. I have a few requests for anyone who might be agreeable. First and foremost, when I arrive in areas, I won't know where to find that which needs recording for posterity, whether it's the homeless areas of a town or perhaps a protest or anything else politically or socially interesting going on in the area at the time. So I'd appreciate any assistance in this area. I'll be blogging, and vlogging, so everyone will know where I am and where I'm going. Hopefully y'all who are in those areas will message me and let me know what to focus on.

Secondly, I would really appreciate having a safe place to park and sleep when it's possible, perhaps have a real meal (I'll be traveling primarily with rice and beans, cheap and filling), perhaps a load of laundry, and perhaps recharge some equipment.

Lastly, I'm hoping that after I'm proving myself valuable in regard to posting and blogging about what I'm seeing and recording, some will be willing to donate or sponsor in minor amounts so I can keep going till I've covered all of the 48 lower states. My funds might get me through about 2 months, after that I'll be dead in the water. But since I'm only buying gas, beans and rice, and the bare necessities, I won't need much and want to find a way to limit contributions to what I need, I'm not wanting to profit from this, pay off that credit card debt, or catch up on the mortgage. Just enough to keep going doing this project.

I'll be starting in the NW where I am currently living and going from there to ... well, I'm thinking y'all should help direct me to where the important things are going on. I'd like to take the entire year of 2011 to do this. I believe I'll bring a unique perspective to what I'm planning for a number of reasons. I've never been homeless or financially strapped till two years ago, and in those two years, I've not felt it because I was borrowing to stay above water. Also, I've never traveled or vacationed or anything. I've moved from and to cities, but once there, I've never had the opportunity really to leave with work and kids and home and such, I just am very small in my world too date, so everything will be new and unusual for me. I won't be able to have any pre-judgements heading into much of anything I'll be seeing.

Goodness, this has gotten long. I guess I should stop here and read some responses before I add anymore. I fear, now that I'm putting this out there again, that I'll get few responses, little interest, and will basically get unrec'd into obscurity, but hey, y'all are the only online forum I frequent, so if not here, where?

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think, any ideas, or criticisms, or concerns will be appreciated.

1. Good luck to you. I think this is IMPORTANT to do. Not enough pictures
of the American homeless and hungry out there. Photographing tent cities and children would be good.

4. Wonderful. Let me know by PM where you are, and I'll make it so.
If you live in CA or OR, I'll be heading up from LA around the 25th of October taking about a week I'm guessing to return here one last time. Let me know sooner if you're en route.

Northern California, I can point out some pretty amazing places that you might like to visit.

Do you have a route?

at one point I had really great credit scores, though.

I have one credit card, max'd out a $25K

25. Not a problem...I have three, myself at about $9K. What with rent, phone
and food ( which I am finding to be increasingly frustrating now ) and my dwindling unemployment account, it is nigh impossible to pay these debts...some people have told me about companies that can negotiate your debt or decrease it by at least 50%; I don't know if this is a scam or not but it sounds to me like you are in a situation where you couldn't handle any set payment plan they offered to you ( I know I can't right now ) but I really have no place to turn in case of me having to move out of this apartment I'm in ( I have three other roommates...I'm trying to make it so they are not going to get screwed in case I have to leave here ).

I wish there was something I could do to help you out...I really do...if this place was all mine, you could crash here, but it is not up to me.

talk to your creditors about negotiating your debt... a number of years ago, I did (not through a company though) and most of the creditors worked something out with me... the worst they can do is say no...

88. Is there any way
you can start a Facebook page with everything you're doing/seeing? You could have a donations area where people could send you $. If everyone sent just $5 each month, you would have money for food and fuel. It wouldn't be charity; I would consider it important information you would be sending.

97. I'm FB illiterate, so I'm not sure. I'll try to look into it. I have a
youtube channel for my biz, and I thought perhaps I would just start a new youtube channel special to this project and post there. I think I can put a PayPal donation button on youtube, but I'm sure. Clearly some things still have to be worked out. I'm thinking that I will look into that during the two weeks I'm back here after the testrun...just in case the test run is so bad from one angle or another that the "real" trip just can't be justified. I'll spend some time trying to learn some options betwixt now and then, so I'll be mostly ready when the time comes.

80. The Capitalistas cannot keep us down and out if we all help each other
If we all pull together we will all get through this right wing revolution we are currently fighting. It's so sad that 99% of Americans don't even know we are being attacked.

The Corporatistas have been waging a class war against you and me for over 30 years now. It has been a stealth war, however, that involves winning thousands of tiny battles, not one big battle. Death by a thousand paper cuts. Now that they have unlimited money from both the US companies and now we find out that the Chamber of Commerce is using money from FOREIGN companies to take over our elections and therefore our lives. We are less than 1 month away from becoming slaves in our own country if the TeaPublicans win this upcoming election.

But no matter what happens in November, we must stand together, help each other, and when the time comes to fight we must fight together to protect our Democracy.

They want to divide us. Remember: divide and conquer! Do not let the TeaPublicans control you. They want you to hate the gays, hate the people who are a different color, hate those people with "THAT" religion, hate the poor people, hate the people WITH a college degree, hate the people WITHOUT a college degree, etc., etc., etc.

You are probably way more capable than to produce "crap", and the idea you have and hopefully the follow through is a very good and courageous one.
Do it as if it is your job, and you will have something worthwhile and probably something that could sell.

I'm in Central NC. I have a large parking lot fenced and gated yard, and I cook hot meals.
I'll follow your progress.
Set up a DU journal, that will be the best way I think to always look for what you're doing.
Good luck to you and your dog. I hope your dog does well and can stay with you.

38. Will do. I'm looking into this journal thingy here (I did mention I'm old right)
I'll start something tonight probably. Since I'll be heading up CA and OR just before the election, I'm thinking there'll be lots to stop and observe. So, I'm pondering my first journal entry regarding where and what y'all think I should record. Perhaps things, like, where's the best place for election day itself. Is there an area where if I record various polling places I'll be able to record election inequality of some sort. Things like this.

39. Let me know when you come
through the midwest. We have lots of room on the farm and would be happy to put you up here for a while. Nice central location. If my brother is gone you can have a room, an adequate room with a full bath attached to the barn and if it is before the legislature is in we also have two rooms that we will have available. After the legislature we never know, one is always full but the other is on and off. Keep my name and do let me know. We have a neighbor that is a professional photographer who is a great liberal guy who has his own business shooting models but is an incredible nature photographer as well and a great guy. You two could have a time talking about your work.

Just shoot me a PM and we can work it out.

I would be freaking out at the same time a bit excited but mostly freaking out. Like you, I am a homebody and I like to feel tucked away in my tiny community. Good luck, I think there is no place you can go that will be too far from a DUer who would help out if you get into any kind of bind. Maybe that helps a little?

Also the angle of the equipment doesn't lend itself well to identification. Yeah, I'm not sure. Don't even know how to find out. I believe what I've read from most photographers is shoot first, apologize and leave if requested. I guess I should consider it something akin to an on-going documentary, so maybe there are some rules or comments about rules that could guide me. I'll be editing so perhaps at first during the test run, I'll blur any recognizable faces.

Judging from these responses, I think you will be just fine. I am so glad someone is doing this. And I am so envious of your adventure. Good luck with everything. Please do keep us posted. I will help in any way I can. I will be watching to see when you are in Tennessee. And a little more advice if you don't mind. Keep a diary or journal, so when you have no online available you can still record your thoughts. If and when you get down, just post that to us and we can help you feel better. Encouragement goes a long way. Set up an emergency buddy (or more) so if you run into trouble, we can know and help. Stay safe. I wish you all the best. One more thing. Don't pass by the angels that keep getting in your way. Trust your gut.

109. Oh, my. I lived in TN, Nashville, 6-9 years old.
I don't remember any of it. It is thought that though there was plenty of childhood trauma in my household, something really dramatic happened when we were in TN. Of course parents say no, but I have zero recollection of Nashville, school, friends, mine or parents' friends, nothing. I have a mild recollection of the house sitting on a real steep hill, otherwise nada. Also relatives have told me that after Nashville my personality changed dramatically.

I will find my way to TN and even to Nashville, I have no idea the address or area so I doubt any memories will be spurred, but I'll be worrying a little about that. Hopefully you'll keep track of the journal, blog, I'm not sure what all, any way there will be ways to keep track of when I'm nearing your neck of the woods.

Another thing you might want to do is tell us all about your eating preferences. I know you say you will be eating a lot of rice and beans, but that isn't what you're going to want for a home cooked meal when you stop somewhere. Are you vegetarian, or is the rice and beans just because of economical reasons? Any food allergies or anything like that?

May Good Luck be your constant companion on your travels. Stay safe!

93. Dont forget cooking from scratch
look up some food banks in the towns you plan on passing through. A simple noodle dough is easy to make, and will provide some variety.
as a matter of fact I suggest you get your hands on some backcountry cook books. Ive made pierogies from scratch with instant mashed potato fillings in the middle of a wilderness area.

same thing with breads and rolls. Not hard, basic ingredients are really cheap.

good luck.

103. I do cook from scratch, always have. It'll be rice and beans. I've
got a 50# of rice, beans are cheap. Otherwise, my only thing, that'll get to me are my javas. I make my own, costing not much at all with instant coffee, cocoa, and sugar, and milk... therein lies the problem, keeping milk cold. Those little containers are a bit spendy these days, so I'm thinkin' I'm going to be SOL on that. I've been sort of conditioning myself for this for two years. I'm sure a lot of that will come out in the blog, journal, where ever I guess I get posted.

118. You really do need to plan for something besides those two starches or you will get sick fast
Further down the thread and much earlier tonight I suggested canned stewed tomatoes to add some vitamins. It also adds a lot of flavor. You need a source of vitamin C so you don't get scurvy -- maybe a jar of Tang, or a bottle of multivitamins.

Using canned milk in your coffee and cocoa will add some complimentary protein to the rice and beans in your diet, as well as calcium. If you consume it at the rate of one 12 oz. can a day you will probably not have much problem with spoilage unless you open it and then leave it for hours in a hot car or the like. If you think you can't afford or otherwise deal with canned milk, get powdered milk and use that. It's wholesome and its flavor deficits will be less noticeable in instant coffee and cocoa than if you just mix it with water.

A jar of nice hydrogenated Skippy peanut butter doesn't need refrigeration, and is another source of protein. Apples don't need refrigeration, either.

The skinniest I ever got was when I was an undergrad -- miles of walking (no car) and a fairly restricted diet due to no money. All of my recommendations are from those days. I really tried to think in terms of getting a bit of everything each day. Each week I would buy seven (yes, 7) apples. Some salad greens. An egg every day because I did have a fridge. PBJ for lunch. You get the idea.

You take good care of yourself, okay? You can do this.

Hekate

96. I can't help much but can give some of my experience from
traveling in a trailer for ten years with my husband and three cats. First your dog will do fine after a few weeks and will enjoy have a new place to explore each time you stop and park. My cats did and they never ran away. They always returned to the trailer and these were cats. With dogs make sure he's on a leash and that you scoop up the poop. Make sure he that he doesn't bark all night if you are out and you will be fine. As long as you meet their needs for warmth, food, water, potty and affection animals are fine as long as they are with their human companions. Also, you might find some jobs along the way in campgrounds, RV parks or tourist attractions with camping. My DH and I often worked a few months for a place to park and some gas and food money. Usually, you commit to two or three days work a week and the rest of the time is yours to do as you wish. We did campground hosts and in some places interpretive tour guides like in caves and such. Also, even the fanciest RV parks have permanents and these are very poor people who haven't quite been made homeless yet so you might get a lot of documentation there along. Poverty isn't just in cities but is very rural too.

Good luck. I wish you well.

Edited on Fri Oct-08-10 01:25 PM by ocd liberal
Especially if I am able to do this laundry for you! In fact, my family and I would be honored to fix you a meal, give you a bed and do your laundry if you end up on the Monterey Peninsula!

105. Start looking for publishers!
I'd suggest starting with the Writers forum on this site and other writers' groups and forums. This should be published!

Oh yeah! Best wishes, and may the Good Lord go with you!

112. By the time you get here to the northeast
I am sure you will be craving something you haven't eaten in a while.

Know that if you end up near me, you will have shower, laundry, parking, etc and I will be happy to cook whatever it is that you may be hungry for.

Be sure and post where you will be posting your updates so that we can follow your journey.

113. Best of luck. Just some nutritional advice: add canned tomatoes to the rice and beans
They are cheap and will supply vitamin A etc. They will also make the rice and beans taste better.

This is short and incomplete because my 5 1/2 y.o. grandson wants my attention and is sitting on my lap. Will check back later.

115. You can stay with us. As long as you need/want.
I'm about 40 miles west of Chicago on my own small farm. Please pm me if you want/need a place to stay or references. You and your dog are welcome. My sister runs the local green market here in the Fox Valley area of IL, and she (and I) are also well connected to the local food pantries and other aid agencies in our areas.

You can "hook up" or stay in a real bed. As long as you are okay with a 'real" farm environment (hay, dust, early risings etc.) we welcome you.

Peace out.
