I was chatting with a friend in the supermarket
Edited on Thu Oct-07-10 07:49 PM by malaise
this afternoon (at 4.32pm Jamaica time). We were both bawling about rain when the place started shaking. Discovered that we had a 4.5 quake with the epicentre in St Margaret's Bay, Portland, (Jamaica).
There's no damage reported anywhere.

add time.

There was a 5.1 in the Cuba region on Monday.

2. All of a sudden a little rain didn't seem so bad, right? Glad you're okay and no
reports of damage. Even though 4.5 isn't a biggie to quake "veterans", that first moment or so when it's all surreal and your mind is trying to grasp what's going on is disconcerting! :hi:

5. A little rain
Road and bridge damage is in the millions of dollars.

My front left wheel went into a pot hole full of water two days ago and I heard the entire front end bawl. We were lucky - there was no major damage. You should see potholes??

Still compared to Haiti after that January quake I guess we are lucky. :hi:

15. Oops. I guess you had every right to be complaining about the rain! We
Seattleites are used to hearing people complain about the rain and we kind of laugh - not what we consider rain at all. But boy! You got RAIN! Dry out and stay safe! :hi:

16. We hadn't ever seen such heavy rain or
such massive thunder storms - the closest to this was back in 79 and we never had the hours of unbelievably heavy non- stop rain.

It surprised everyone including those of us who take these things seriously.

I actually walked out of a meeting one hour earlier when the rain came pelting down. I had never seen a leak in that building - I was shocked I tell you and there was so much water on the roads because of the saturation from the days of rain that it took me 45 minutes to get to the supermarket - less than six minutes away under normal circumstances.

20. A 4.5 quake is hardly international news
The floods and damage were covered on CNN, GEM$NBC and BBC.
Today's rain was just typical daytime heating - afternoon thunderstorms, but because the place is saturated, we're now facing instant flash floods.

Still when I look at the hills surrounding us, they are beautifully green.

13. How convenient for you!
Here in the La area, whenever there is a small earthquake the local TV "news" programs show us video, sometimes LIVE! video of cans that have fallen off of grocery store shelves as a result of the shaking. It seems that people find the tipping and falling of cans to be a significant happenstance, so much so that the need for footage of the hapless victuals is so widely documented and broadcasted using many millions of dollars of professional electronic equipment. But since you were in a grocery store, you could observe any fallen cans without delay. I hope someone captured them with cell phone cameras so maybe the people of LA will have something to look at between the car chases on channel nine.

No one captured a damn thing. I'm not even sure if a can fell.
We were at the cash registers.

22. I have a question...
How does one go about emigrating to your wonderful country of residence?

I'm quite fed up with living Stateside, and thus am exploring my options.

23. Lots of Americans live here
and it's cheaper to live here but I don't know that I could use the words 'wonderful country of residence' given the levels of poverty, crime and violence.

On the other hand, lots of NGOs hire people to deal with the environment, teaching, new approaches to agriculture and of course tourism.
