New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is reconsidering his decision to pulled the plug on Access to the Region's Core (ARC), according to reports.

Christie made the decision after a nearly hour-long meeting with the U.S. transportation secretary, the Associated Press reported.

Citing soaring costs, Christie announced just yesterday that he was scrapping the multi-billion-dollar project, which would have doubled commuter capacity from New Jersey to Midtown with two new tunnels running under the Hudson River into a vastly expand Penn Station.

"Gov. Christie and I had a good discussion this afternoon, during which I presented a number of options for continuing the ARC tunnel project," Secretary Ray LaHood was quoted as saying.

4. Did Jim Gearhart give him permission to do so?

"It surprised me when the Governor called me…..and loudly expressed his unhappiness with the agreement," said Schundler. "The Governor informed me that NJ 101.5 radio host Jim Gearhart was saying he had caved in to the union…..He said the leaders at the NJEA had demeaned him and it was utterly intolerable for him to be viewed as having given in to them. The money was not worth it."

5. Someone posted on here that the NJ lawmakers
told him they want to know why and explain himself. I think he is going to have a hard time getting any thing thru their congress that he doesn't make an order for. The people are fed up with him. Wonder if they could start a recall.

8. I wonder if Krugman's article today had anything to do with this.
He made some pretty good arguments:

The Erie Canal. Hoover Dam. The Interstate Highway System. Visionary public projects are part of the American tradition, and have been a major driver of our economic development.

And right now, by any rational calculation, would be an especially good time to improve the nation’s infrastructure. We have the need: our roads, our rail lines, our water and sewer systems are antiquated and increasingly inadequate. We have the resources: a million-and-a-half construction workers are sitting idle, and putting them to work would help the economy as a whole recover from its slump. And the price is right: with interest rates on federal debt at near-record lows, there has never been a better time to borrow for long-term investment.

But American politics these days is anything but rational. Republicans bitterly opposed even the modest infrastructure spending contained in the Obama stimulus plan. And, on Thursday, Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, canceled America’s most important current public works project, the long-planned and much-needed second rail tunnel under the Hudson River.
