that's a thread or 12 in itself. I'll drop a check in the mail personally when you can show me how I've benefited from my treatment of you.

7. I realize this is not "politically correct", but my mother sometimes slips
and uses "negro" or "colored". She doesn't suggest that anyone should be thanking anyone else, by any means! But she is almost 85 and does sometimes revert to the terms she grew up with. I asked her about it back a decade ago or so and she said something to the effect of "When I was young, they were colored, then it was negro, then African-American - or was it black first then African-American?"

So I guess my comment is just this: call him out on his "Thank white people for free everything", but I guess I understand the use of colored at his age....

11. Yeah, my first thought was that "colored" is about right for a ninety year old...
...bigoted or not. The free everything comment is, of course, bigotry. Does anyone know of any studies done on the use of such racial/ethnic labels...how they've changed over the years, what they say about those who use them, how they reflect general attitudes, and so forth?
Sounds like a great project for sociologists and English majors.

12. My mom is 87 and still uses negro and colored. She's from the south and truly is not a racist. She
was taught that that was the polite way to refer to blacks. We have all corrected her and she sometimes remembers and uses black (never heard her say African American) but most of the time she just says negro. I know my mom, I know she is not racist, but it still grates when I hear it. I agree though that the rest of the comment is very racist and sad.

10. The problem is this isn't really about what a 90 year old said in as much as it is
about how people like this 90 yo woman can't see how what comes out of their mouth as being racist. They tell themselves that they know people of other races, they claim those people are their friends, yet spew the most disgusting crap without a thought on it being racist. I grew up with people like this, one aunt claimed she was friends with a black woman she worked with then in the next breath said she would never allow the woman in her house because she was black but aunt wasn't a racist or a hypocrite in her mind.

Free everything? Let the senile old racist tell everyone what was free?
