'Happy Coffins' Make Funerals Less Grim
(Oct. 7) -- Come on, baby, don't fear the reaper.

That's the message, not from Blue Oyster Cult, from a Singapore nonprofit that recently revealed a series of coffins featuring fanciful designs and festooned with cheery slogans, such as "Say hello to my wonderland" and "Hello, coffin. You seem to be nice."

The 12 caskets, or "Happy Coffins," represent the winning designs from an international competition held by the Lien Foundation to create caskets that take the stigma and fear out of death.

"The traditional negative associations surrounding the coffin were transformed to a celebratory symbol of courage, life and beauty," foundation spokeswoman Genevieve Kuek said in an e-mail to AOL News.

Many of the 733 entries from 33 countries, however, appear not only to destigmatize the Grim Reaper but kick him in the 'nads while jabbing him in the eyes.

2. There is a Mexican Song
...

When I die, I have disposed
in my my will and testament
How I shall be buried
How I shall be buried...

In a cellar
replete with wine
and a cluster of grapes
resting on my palate,
resting on my palate...

Because I love win... win... wine! Straight from the bottle,
and also br... br... bread! More bread! more wine,
Whoever doesn't drink wine,
is an animal.

5. Lol, I wonder why no one thought of that before?
I think it's great. Although it could eventually have the opposite effect and turn 'fun' into 'grim' over time.

6. The coffins in Ghana are pretty festive
Last weeks Amazing Race had a section where the contestants had to move coffins like this thru the streets of Ghana

8. I thought those were awesome and wondered why we don't do that here
I bet someone starts doing it if they haven't already.

Those were cool.

9. It's been a fad in the US for awhile, to have peers decorate dead teens' coffins...
with colorful Sharpies and Magic Markers

13. That's great. I'm glad to hear it.
Although, I was also glad to realize that it's good that I never had to know that.

12. I want smiley faces all over mine, with a plaque that reads:
"If you dare smile at this, I'll come back in one week and MESS YOU UP!"

There's even a legitimate site where you can design your own (real) coffin: http://www.colourfulcoffins.com/pre_design_create_a_custom_design.php

Rule #1 in all this is: Don't let your drinking buddies design it for you!

14. There are times I'm glad I grew up in a military family.
My dad rests at Arlington, in a solid oak coffin. Mom will join him eventually, as will I. None of us will go to their final rest adorned with bumper stickers.
