Former president George W. Bush, speaking at a university fundraiser in Alabama on Thursday evening, joked that some of his critics may be shocked that he has been able to write a memoir of his two terms in office.

"I have written a book. This will come as a shock to some of the elites. They didn't think I could read a book, much less write one," the Press-Register of Mobile quotes Bush as having said. "It's been an interesting experience. I'm not shilling for it - aw, heck, you oughta buy a copy."

His book, titled Decision Points, is due out Nov. 9.

Bush also told those at the annual University of Mobile Leadership Banquet that he doesn't miss being president.

"I loved being your president," he said. "But frankly, I'm having the time of my life not being your president. I do not miss the limelight. I have zero desire to be in the press. I have zero desire to be on your TV screens. Eight years is enough of that."
