Osama Bin Laden happy when Bush was elected, his son, Omar, says
Edited on Sat Oct-09-10 08:06 PM by sabrina 1
In a long interview in Rolling Stone recently, Omar Bin Laden spoke about his life now, his beliefs, his childhood, the time he spent in Afghanistan with his father before 9/11 and his eventual decision not to become, as he says his father had hoped, the leader of Al Queda. Bored as a teenager and cut off from the world at Tora Bora, after studying to become a warrior, he decided to leave and said goodbye to his father for the last time:

Osama's Prodigal Son

My father is a wealthy man," Omar recalls. "He gave me $10,000 in cash. He told me to get a car and go." Omar's eyes well with tears. "If he wanted to keep me, he had to follow my way. If I wanted to keep him, I have to follow his way. I had a broken heart as I drove away. We don't show our feelings. I kissed his hand and said goodbye. This is the last time I saw him."

He remembers his last glimpse of his father: As Osama bin Laden walked away, he wore the same small, mysterious smile he had when he suggested his sons become suicide bombers.

Alone for the first time in his life, Omar took a car to the Pakistan border. A few months later, his father destroyed the World Trade Center, killing thousands. "I never thought the attack would be civilian buildings," Omar says. "I thought it would be a ship, like the USS Cole. My father's dream was to bring the Americans to Afghanistan. He would do the same thing he did to the Russians. I was surprised the Americans took the bait. I so much respected the mentality of President Clinton. He was the one who was smart. When my father attacked his places, he sent a few cruise missiles to my father's training camp. He didn't get my father, but after all the war in Afghanistan, they still don't have my father. They have spent hundreds of billions. Better for America to keep the money for its economy. In Clinton's time, America was very, very smart. Not like a bull that runs after the red scarf.

Then he explains why his father was happy when Bush was elected. Bush unlike Clinton who was smarter, not allowing himself to be pushed into war. The Neocons were pressuring Clinton also. So Bush's election made it a certainty that all these forces would come together to get these wars started, and to plunge the U.S. into debt to keep them going.

I was still in Afghanistan when Bush was elected," he continues. "My father was so happy. This is the kind of president he needs — one who will attack and spend money and break the country. Even Bush's own mother says he is the biggest idiot boy of his family. I am sure my father wanted McCain more than Obama. McCain has the same mentality as Bush. My father would be disappointed because Obama get the position."

"Do you think Obama can win in Afghanistan?"

"Out of what you see," Omar asks, "what do you think?"

According to Omar, Americans are actually lucky that his father has not been captured or killed. "It is going to be worse when my father dies," he says. "The world is going to be very, very nasty then. It will be a disaster."

"Omar always says that without the head, the arms and legs will run wherever," Zaina says.

"I know this for a fact," Omar says. "People were always asking my father to attack more. They would say, 'Sheik, we must do more.' Crazy fucking things. My father has a religious goal. He is controlled by the rules of jihad. He only kills if he thinks there is a need."

"Will there be more attacks?" I ask.

"I don't think so," Omar says. "He doesn't need to. As soon as America went to Afghanistan, his plan worked. He has already won."

Emphasis mine. Edited to include that highlighted paragraph.

He also speaks about the U.S. helping to create Al Queda in the eighties and how his father was then an ally of the U.S.

It's interesting that he has not been arrested as so many others have for simply knowing Bin Laden. He seems to be free to go wherever he wants to.

He appears to be attracted to Western life's pleasures despite his background. He spent time with the reporter frequenting bars and strip clubs in Beirut, saying with a smile 'I'm glad my father doesn't run the world'.

It is after midnight when Osama bin Laden's fourth-born son, Omar, leads me into a nightclub called Les Caves de Boys in the center of Damascus. Marked only by a small neon sign on a side street in an upscale quarter of the city, the basement bar is dark and secluded, enveloped by an air of exclusivity. Omar brushes past the two heavyset Syrian thugs at the door and picks a booth in the back. A dozen or so wealthy Arab men are drinking whiskey and watching Russian strippers put on a show.

He is married to a British woman, a grandmother nearly twice his age. The author believes he is authentic in his rejection of his father's world:

Now 28, Omar is one of 11 sons of Osama bin Laden. But from an early age, Omar stood out from his brothers for his independence. Though Omar does not believe that any of his siblings are still by his father's side, he is the only bin Laden son to publicly disavow his father's violence. In Growing Up bin Laden, co-authored last year with his mother and an American writer named Jean Sasson, Omar not only captures the insanity and cruelty inside his father's world, but also provides an intimate portrait of what it is like to be the son of a sociopath. "In many ways, Omar's story represents how the modern Arab world is thinking through its views of the West," observes Steve Coll, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Bin Ladens and president of the New America Foundation. "They accept the critique provided by Al Qaeda but not its idea of never-ending war. Like Omar, they won't follow Osama onto the battlefield."

I'm surprised there isn't a Fatwa out on him. Or that the CIA never wanted to talk to him. Not really sure what to think, but the Bin Ladens seem to have immunity as far as the U.S. is concerned, compared to other Muslims who had far less knowledge of our supposed #1 enemy in the whole world, yet ended up in Guantanamo, 12 year old kids and elderly shepherds eg, for years.

However, I hope the Rightwingers who thought Bush was so tough and scary to Al Queda finally realize what many more practical people realized a long time ago, that nothing played more into the hands of extremists, than Bush's invasion of a ME country and of Afghanistan.

He certainly has a lot of insights and information, which could certainly be useful. Though some of what he says is speculation, he knows a great deal and is pretty forthcoming, so the CIA would have been remiss in not questioning him...

I check them every once in a while, but need to put them on my desktop as I always find something interesting whenever I do.

Btw, I had to edit as the most important paragraph where he talks about how happy Bin Laden was about Bush, didn't appear in the OP for some reason. Lol, I am getting paranoid, I thought it was censored. But, no, I had used a } instead of a ] and didn't see it right away so was beginning to think when I couldn't fix it, that there was some kind of conspiracy going on! Lol.

Nice to see you Mz Molly.

interesting excerpt. Edited now. But I found it very interesting and think Democrats should use it in the campaign against Republicans:

Even Bush's own mother says he is the biggest idiot boy of his family. I am sure my father wanted McCain more than Obama. McCain has the same mentality as Bush. "He also speaks about the U.S. helping to create Al Queda in the eighties and how his father was then an ally of the U.S." That's indisputable, but for many apologists of Bush, it doesn't even register! Actually, "we" (the government) have been backing Muslim fundamentalists from at least 30 years earlier. Specifically, the "Muslim brotherhood" against the secularism of Nasser and others.

Edited on Sun Oct-10-10 07:24 PM by sabrina 1
information on how the U.S. lured the Soviet Union into Afghanistan, an interview with Bzezinsky, months before the SU decided to invade. It was deleted for some reason. But you can find the info online. What I don't know is whether Carter was fully on board with the plans, but that was still the Cold War era and it is likely that he was. I have not checked to see if he agreed with Bzezinsky's version of the story. He, Bzezinsky, is quite proud of what they did, saying that the creation of Al Queda was worth the downfall of the SU.

Reagan gets the credit for bringing down the Soviet Union, but it may well have been that decision by Carter that began the downfall of the SU.

12. Basically states what thinking men and women knew long ago...
unfortunately, the republican party didn't and doesn't have any of those.

The war on "terra" needed to be kept off the front pages - it needed to be fought clandestinely - in the back alleys of the world, well out of view of CNN and Al Jazeera television cameras. Invading countries brandishing state of the art weapons systems was ludicrous; all it did was inflame passions against us, and provided free recruitment videos for those bent on our destruction. The son is absolutely correct - Clinton understood that; Bush was clueless.

We will be paying for Bush/Cheney stupidity for decades. Families of those killed will be paying the price forever.

I'm happy to hear that Mr. Bush is having the time of his life not being our president; for those of us not slain on the battlefields of foolish wars that idiot started, the feeling is mutual.

From the article:

I would not be surprised either if Bin Laden funneled money to Bush and McCain. How difficult would it be? There were many members of the Bin Laden family living here for years and all of them had plenty of money. Yet, while ordinary Muslims were rounded up for questioning after 9/11, the Bin Laden family were quickly flown out of the country. I know the FBI claims to have spoken to them, but how much investigation could they have done in just a few days?

20. As usual, excellent work, Octafish
This struck me especially:

In another Simpson book, "The Splendid Blonde Beast," the author wrote about George H. W. Bush's father, Prescott, and his maternal grandfather, George Herbert Walker. Both Bert Walker and Prescott Bush were powerful financial supporters of Adolf Hitler.

I wonder if they only supported him financially, which of course is bad enough. But from what I have learned about that family, much of it from your excellent posts, I believe they probably admired him. The idiot son certainly could be viewed by the victims of his policies as their version of Hitler. One million dead Iraqis. Torture, theft of resources and not a sign of remorse for all those innocent lives he is responsible for.

Green is their favorite color indeed. And we know they would do anything to get it, because they have, even betray this country.

That's possible. I wondered why he has not been a target of extremists. The article does point out that he is careful how he speaks about his father, conscious of the Muslim world's interest in what he has to say.

Still, I would not want to be in his position. All it takes is one person who doesn't get the memo and decides he's harming the cause.

I would think he has way more information that would be of interest to the CIA than any of the old shepherds and the children they rounded up and held for years.

"He didn't get my father, but after all the war in Afghanistan, they still don't have my father. They have spent hundreds of billions."

Are government officials foolish or is the public foolish for buying these bullshit soap opera explanations for going to war?

25. Yes, that was one of the rightwingers' favorite
attack against Clinton 'he could have had Bin Laden but he failed to get him, Dubya has the courage to do what Clinton wouldn't do, go get him'! I remember those days, arguing with them, telling them that if Bush went to war, Osama would be dancing in his cave and he would probably never be captured'. They told me I was insane, a traitor, 'in love with Clinton' and stupid.

I will have to go visit them again if they are still posting on that old site just to say 'told you so'.

Personally, I blame the public. Politicians know they can manipulate them with fear. If we were not such a cowardly society, so easily scared, they would not get away with half of what they get away with.

But I also think government officials are stupid too. Maybe we DO get the government we deserve.

26. Invading Afghanistan to get Bin Laden
sounds like a public narrative, similar to the WMD/Iraq narrative. Whatever it takes to sell the public on the desired policy. Of course it's more comforting to believe Bush is a faux cowboy who took the bait. IMO that is the desired public response. The real policy is hidden from the public.

27. Well, I think the real reason we invaded Afghanistan was to
secure the region before someone else did, like the Russians eg. We now have military bases in the 'stan countries north of Afghanistan. The last big oil resources are supposed to be in the Caspian Sea. I remember reading an article in the NYT a few years before 9/11 which detailed maps of the Caspian Sea and what it would take for the U.S. to get there. We aren't the only ones trying. If it turns out that the speculation is not true, it will all have been for nothing.

And Unocal wanted to build a pipeline through Afghanistan in the 'nineties. The Taliban refused during the summer of 2001. Invading Afghanistan was 'on the table' long before 9/11. Either Bin Laden played into OUR hands and the U.S. was just incredibly lucky or there is something else we do not know.

50. Speaking of John Travolta. Omar says that Travolta was a hero
of his from the movies he had watched. But he says, he was in a hotel where Travolta was staying and was asked if he'd like to meet him. This is what happened according to Omar:

From the article:

"We were staying at one of the best hotels in Rome," Zaina says.

"The owner asked if I would like to meet him. I said sure, just to say hello. But he wouldn't look at me. He wouldn't answer when I tried to introduce myself. The owner of the hotel was embarrassed. Later, in a British newspaper, he said that I was son of Hitler."

"He said he was disgusted to be in the same room with bin Laden," Zaina says. "It was unbelievable."

56. They are traitors, the felonious five, as Vince Bugliosi says.
No need for our enemies to even fire a shot, they just need to finance their guys in DC and a coup takes place ironically with the help of half the country.

Why have they not been impeached?

are fools or fortune hunters - or both.

45. One thing, though: CheneyBush didn't need to be lured into
war in the Mideast--it's what they were dead set on from the very beginning. The 9/11 attacks just provided an excuse to do what they always wanted to do.

47. I agree but I think Osama Bin Laden knew that. I am sure
he knew they were pressuring Clinton, and knew about the PNAC. So all he had to do after Bush was elected was to launch an attack and give the PNACers their reason for war?

46. +10000 Front page!
Great work by Rolling Stone. Looks like OBL should have had the mission accomplished sign, not GWB. I sure wish we could follow the money trail through the stolen election of W through 911 to find if people benefited on both sides from the wars and occupation. Someone was getting planefuls of billions of dollars during the war, then there was the missing trillions right before 911 and missing money from the Pentagon afterwords.

To be sure, not everything is a conspiracy, it is that ruthless people with great means thrive by turning chaotic events to their advantage, and often work together to amass and consolidate even more power and money. It is in the greatest interest of this country to find where this money went, because losing it broke our economy. This article should be on every front page in the country.

49.  Omar supposedly has Schizophrenia..or some type of mental illness

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMoodNews/omar-bin-laden-mental-illness-caused-genes-stress/story?id=11624890

http://psychcentral.com/news/2010/07/12/omar-bin-laden-and-bipolar-disorder/15503.html

“He’d learn blue jokes from watching Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey on TV, then tell them to strict Muslim clerics and burst into fits of laughter when they looked appalled. But then he’d regret his behavior and become very depressed,” Omar’s wife told The Sun.

Omar and his wife have reportedly separated over his condition. “I just can’t cope with this anymore. I love Omar with all my heart, but I’ve asked him for a divorce,” she told London’s Daily Mail.

Omar’s wife Zaina blames his psychological problems on his father Osama Bin Laden and the terrorist lifestyle they were forced to live while in the mountain caves of Afghanistan.

“There’s no one else responsible for this. Omar loves and hates Osama at the same time,” she said.

“He loves him because he is his father, but hates what he has done. I think he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after 9/11. Seeing what his dad had done ruined Omar’s life.

“He has not seen his father for more than ten years and wants peace in the world, not violence and war.”

Omar, responding to his wife’s statements about his mental health, said they are intended to harm his reputation

52. Interesting, thank you for the links.
Even in the RS interview, he seemed to flip from one mood to another. Eg, when he was in the Nightclub watching the strippers etc. and he reporter asked him if he was enjoying it, he said he was. But the following morning, he seemed to have had a change of mind.

It would be strange if those children didn't have some mental issues. They were abused physically and emotionally. Not to mention the feelings of guilt he must feel, unable to support his father but unwilling to completely condemn him. As he said, no one wants anything to do with HIM, because of who he is.

His father was a fanatical fundie who went way further than the average fanatic, making the family name infamous throughout the world and in recorded history. Even a mentally healthy person would have problems dealing with all of this.

54. To Omar: A lot of us knew Bush was a freak when he was
a candidate. But, we have what we call here "red states," where the majority of the people are stupid and/or greedy.

58. I've read about Omar before. Yes, all the bin Ladens have freedom because they have $$
lots of it.

What Omar says about entrenching in Afghanistan is the truth, it's the end-er of nations for sure.

Cheers

62. True, they didn't care though, the don't care about this country.
They had a plan, and 9/11 gave them their reason to implement that plan, regardless of how damaging it would be to this country. And that is why I have no qualms about calling them 'traitors'.
