Revenge against the speed cameras: U.S. man buys police department's website
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

It's poetic justice for the 21st century.

A U.S. man is exacting revenge against a local police department that issued him a speeding ticket - by buying their domain name from under the city's nose.

Now Brian McCrary is using the website www.bluffcitypd.com to campaign against speed cameras in the Tennessee city - where they have caused something of a local outcry since they were installed earlier this year.

'It's kind of surprising that they'd just let it lapse like that,' Mr McCrary - who was caught doing 56mph in a 45mph zone and fined $90 - told reporters.

'I figured they would be aware and renew it on their own.'

1. Too busy rolling in piles of money to notice the expiration of their domain name, I guess
Going off on a tangent, but I hope class-action suits are brought to bear against every single municipality that installs these cameras.

2. CA may have the most excessive red light camera fines
From a website that provides "Info & Advice about California Red Light Camera Tickets":

FAQ # 15: Why is the fine so high in California ? Are there exceptions?

Answer: When defendants raise that question in court, the judges explain that the State legislature set the fine so high (current fine is approx. $470, not including the approx. $100 cost of attending traffic school) in order to strongly deter drivers from running red lights. They also usually quote figures, provided by the local police, which say that accidents here are down 10 - 40% as the result of the cameras. But on the east coast, where the fines are just $50 to $75 (and the tickets do not carry a "point"), the police there have been publishing similar accident reduction figures. Evidently, at least on the east coast, a much smaller penalty has been equally effective in getting drivers to behave.
<snip>

The California legislature is continuing to increase the fine. A new $20 surcharge went into effect on June 10, 2010 (enacted by Executive Session Bill ACX 8-3), and as of July 2010 there is a proposed new $40 surcharge which if enacted will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2011....

3. Ca is using traffic fines in place of taxes
They do it for all sorts of things, like parking tickets, that have nothing to do with public safety. Get an infraction in California and you will pay and pay.

5. The post-it-note bandit was a Patriot too
he or she would go around with a step stool and place post-it notes over the traffic cameras lenses. then the camera would snap a picture of the yellow paper... 1000's of tickets were thwarted this way. as it isn't until a cop comes out and removes the post it does the camera "catch" anyone.

However like putting coins in someone else's parking meter, it is illegal.
