Male college student raped by his two roommates
Two University of Wisconsin-La Crosse students have been charged with sexually assaulting their roommate in their dorm room last week.

At their court appearance on Wednesday, Casey Gudis, 18, was charged with first degree sexual assault and Brayden Wienke, 19, was charged with party to first degree sexual assault, according to a criminal complaint. Both men face up to 60 years in prison if convicted.

First degree sexual assault is a felony, according to the complaint.

The assault occurred on Sept. 27 in the Sanford Hall dormitory, where the victim and the two men charged with the assault were all roommates in a triple residence hall room, according to the criminal complaint.

1. Assuming the allegations are true ... what is wrong with these people? Did they think they would ..
get away with it?

6. girls/women raped often. chidlren are raped often. the odds of getting away with it is HUGE.
rapes are generally not reported. of those reported, they are generally not prosecuted. of those prosecuted, rapists are generally not convicted.

i think they thought odds pretty good they could get away with it.

7. Exactly - rape is a relatively easy crime to get away with.
I hope this victim defies the odds, as I always do, but if I were a betting woman...

2. Their defense is that they routinely poked either other
in their butts with stuff?

So this guy went to campus health center and got a rape exam, and pressed charges, for no reason and they were just doing something they always do.

It's totally normal in any dorm room to pull down your roommates pants in front of a group of other people and shove something up his butt while he tells you to stop.

Yeah, right. :(

5. Just like you can't rape your wife silly.
Frankly I don't care if they DID routinely engage in sexual activities together before this - I doubt he would have gone through all of this if he had consented this time.

8. I live in La Crosse. From the local paper, the La Crosse Tribune:
http://lacrossetribune.com/news/local/article_673be00a-d1c4-11df-8e86-001cc4c002e0.html

Two University of Wisconsin-La Crosse freshmen are accused of sexually assaulting another male student with a lint roller in a residence hall room late last month.

Casey Gudis, 18, of Ladysmith, Wis., and Brayden Wienke, 19, of Clear Lake, Wis., each were charged Wednesday in La Crosse County Circuit Court with first-degree sexual assault, Wienke as party to the crime. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and 20 years on extended supervision.

Wienke is accused of pinning the victim to the floor of a Sanford Hall room about 2:30 p.m. Sept. 27 while Gudis sodomized the man with the lint roller's handle, according to the complaint. The three students knew each other before the incident.

The 18-year-old victim told authorities the incident caused "unbearable pain."
"He stated he yelled for people to take it out at least twice as people in the room laughed at him," according to the complaint, which states three other students witnessed the assault.

Here are the roommates:

The tough guy on the left was the rapist, the big guy on the right held down the victim. Their college careers at UW-La Crosse are over. Hopefully they both will be on the sex offender's list the rest of their lives.

9. boys being boys, youthful indiscretion, teens....
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 11:40 AM by seabeyond
why do i say it like this?

there are different threads on subjects coming from this with different angles and as long as it meets our criteria, we defend as acceptable with exactly those comments. absolutely no effort in looking at the underlining disrespect of behavior that allows a certain mentality and acceptance.

we as a society, are condoning much of this and then when we have results like this, we are.... outraged.

but then i guess it may just be the prude in me, and the overall puritan nation we live in.

and has nothing to do with the anything goes, sexually obsessed nation we have become in the last decade.

I think this city is pretty much repulsed by the crime. I read nothing here about boys being boys.

26. Not necessarily because they thought he was gay.
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 05:26 PM by kenny blankenship
This seems like a typical expression of male dominance, if startling in the severity of expression.

Look at the perps. You know who these guys are from your own high school experience, right? You should recognize them instantly. I sure do. They're jocks. They've spent their whole lives in tightly bonded, exclusively male societies whose purpose is violent competition, and in which membership is also intensely competitive, both for rank within the group and in the first place just to gain admission.

Jocks very frequently talk about fucking each other up the ass, cumming in each other's faces, making each other suck their dicks. But when they do, it's purely as an expression of dominance - asserting their high rank or general superiority over the rank of the target of their trash talk. Needless to say it has nothing to do with the speaker finding his target physically beautiful, or his thought that the other boy is a really nice guy who's fun to be with. When a jock yells "SUCK IT! or "In your face BITCH!" to another jock or "get ready to bend over, rover", he is saying that he is so much better than the other player that the other player is forced to worship his dick, that the other player has had his masculinity canceled, and that he will be used as an object to absorb pain to give pleasure to the winner. Not that these trash talkers are interested in gay boys or being gay, mind you, but that's how they boost their self-regard and status. There's no presumption that the recipient of this abuse is actually gay. The trash talker is expressing aggression, not attraction. And he probably would estimate the number of gays on his team or the other team at zero. He is saying that he will violently force his opponent to do what he least wants to do in the whole world - to provide pleasure to his rival.

You get some of these athletes together in a residence hall in the first year mixed with other kids, and sometimes they don't know exactly how to act anymore. They've lost their all-male, precisely ranked, violence based society and don't know what their rank is anymore. They may assert it suddenly and inappropriately with others who haven't lived under their rules. They might just crack, and do (approximately) the kinds of things they've always talked about in their trash talk to each other. Until they manage to split and join a fraternity, no regular ass can be considered safe. Once in the frat they can paddle and be paddled, and then it's all among consenting adults.

34. It's an open secret that every football game (and practice)
probably leads one or more players with concussions. Add up the concussions, and you have permanent brain damage and early death.
At the same time, just about every sport is contaminated with people using drugs to enhance performance.

We need to analyze our entire society's obsession with "sport".

I encouraged my kids to go out for track, but I encouraged them to do their personal best, regardless of what the other team did.

What evidence is there that this was a hate crime? To what protected class does the victim belong? The article says nothing about motivation.

This looks to me like plain old sexual assault.

21. I didn't get that from the articles, but I suppose it could be the case.
The defense of "we all get our jollies sticking things up each others butts" leads me to believe this is a Jackass-inspired crime, not a homophobia-inspired one.

We had a similar incident in the junior high locker room several years back. Now, an adult must be present at all times.

Is it rape if the "rapist" is a total jerk?

On edit: not all wrestlers nor are all atheletes jerks; any more than all police officers are out-of-control fascists. It just seems that this is the kind of shit that happens "when atheletes go wild".

19. My heart goes out to the victim. He didn't deserve for this to happen.
It's very hard for a woman to speak out about this crime, so I imagine it was worse for this young man. I am very glad that his attackers were brought to justice.

The thing that truly bothers me is the fact that the two boys considered this incident "playing around". Granted that some folks engage in horseplay, but the violence involved in this occurence is appalling and horrendous. This is sick. This reflects on the tolerence of tremendous violence in this country. It's sad and shocking that there is an element in this country that would play an incident like this off. WTF is wrong with people?

And the poor young man will be affected by this attack for the rest of his life. I hope he is able to get the help he needs to heal. :(

22. The saddest part about this story for me isn't the actual physical attack.
To me, it seems that by flicking the cards at the other guy and by having a Nerf pistol at ready, the victim was trying to fit in with the general rough housing. The over-the-top attack is an indication of total rejection by the other room mates.

it is a power play. Rape is Never,Ever right. I am tired of this particular crime. People have the right to choose who, what, and when to give their bodies to. I wonder if the young man had of answered the call of violence toward him with violence what would have been said.

35. Sexual assault on college campuses is a huge problem.
This isn't the first case of it, and it certainly won't be the last. This is a horrible crime, and I do not wish to minimize it, but I am suspicious about it getting more media attention than the numerous rapes of women that occur every day on campus. Many of these rapes are never reported, taken seriously by the police, or result in a conviction.

One in five women in college will be sexually assaulted.

36. Did everyone in this thread read the article? Some of the responses are equating this with date
rape and the like which, although clearly a power issue, is also tinged with sexual gratification.
From the article, however, this is more of a humiliation issue, more along the line of what some cops have been accused of and/or standard hazing practices...

Strange and sick regardless, but folks need to read the article.
