Nazi teabagger only did it to be closer to his son...
Watching coverage of the Republican candidate whose hobby is dressing up as a Nazi.

Three defenses offered:
1) He only does it to show his love and reverence for the German military.

2) He did it to be closer to his son.

3) He didn't just dress up as Nazis for fun. He also dressed up as Confederate soldiers.
The third one is the one that really grinds me.

The Confederate States of America should be remembered in roughly the same way we remember the Nazis.

If contemporary Germans drove around in Trans Ams with a swastika painted on the hood it would not be considered cute. If contemporary Germans referred to WWII as "The war of western aggression" it would not be cool.

The CSA was a depraved operation. The CSA planned to subdue the Union and then turn to Mexico to conquer it so that slavery could be reintroduced there. It was an insane, pathological break-away nation dedicated to no proposition other than the right to own human beings and the use of military force to expand and export slavery as an institution.

"I also dress up as a Confederate soldier" is not exactly a defense.

1. I have 2 sons
and I can't think of any time where either I or their Dad considered dressing up like Nazis for a bit of family bonding. Never crossed out minds.

Lots of baseball, camping trips, hiking, family dinners, but no Nazis. :eyes:

2. We dress up as zombies to be close together...
the only problem there is that when the real zombies invade us our kids will be too desensitized to take it seriously!

3. I don't agree at all with your description of the CSA
and it was far from being anything comparable to Nazi Germany. To say something like this lightens what Nazi Germany really was.

6. I have to agree.
The main issues of the Civil War were what they always are in wars - money, power, control.

13. Comparing the CSA to the Nazi SS is one of the more ridiculous things I've seen on DU
That's saying a lot.

14. He dressed up as a Union soldier, not a rebel
I saw a pic on Olbermann tonight; he was in Union blue. Dunno if that changes your viewpoint any, but I thought you should have the facts.

Personally, I'm conflicted on this. I could see myself being a WW2 German re-enactor... as part of being a WW2 re-enactor. But I would be a US re-enactor first.

Being ONLY a German WW2 re-enactor... that's a bit creepy. And being in an SS unit is more than a bit creepy!

I went to an airshow in Minnesota the past couple of years, a fairly big one at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prarie. They had both a US and German WW2 re-enactor's camps. Here's a pic of my kid on a machine-gun-equipped BMW motorcycle:

It was interesting. The German re-enactors had their Mausers and MP40s and StG44s and potato-masher grenades, the Americans had their Garands and M-1 Carbines and Tommy guns and pineapple grenades. They had tents set up full of cots and radios and backpacks and field kits, and the German re-enactors even had a portable towed field kitched set up.

It's something I could see myself doing, but not dedicated myself to the German side. More like "Okay, we have enough Americans. Krispos, you're being a German this weekend."
