The cult of the McRib: Celebrating mystery meat (what is it?)
The cult of the McRib: Celebrating mystery meat

--------------------------

The Wall Street Journal today delves into the shrouded cult of McRibophiles, documenting the great lengths they'll go to obtain one of the elusive sandwiches, which are sporadically and unreliably available at McDonalds franchises.

But even these guys aren't really sure what in the hell's in a McRib (hint: it ain't ribs):

"It's a conglomeration of pork waste, as far as I can tell," says Kate Sedgwick, 34, a travel blogger who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina. (read the full story)

1. Does it taste good? Then who cares what's in it
America in microcosm. We throw away tons of wholesome food because there's a spot on that apple or a bruise on that peach, but a McRib sandwich? We'll have two people fighting over one in a Dumpster and a team of reporters covering it blow-by-blow.

As usual, I blame the Republicans.

It's a true fact, even after they've been shown. Sounds like I'm talking shit, but I know it for certain!

4. And, like Frosty the Snowman, they're coming back next month -- but only for six weeks.
My mother will be in hog (parts) heaven. (I won't mention the gist of this article to her, however...)

7. I still like the Simpsons episode that spoofed this.
Homer and others were trying to figure out what kind of meat it was.

As Krusty said to the crowd; you're way off, think smaller with more legs.

8. Supposedly McRib's sporadic appearances have to do with the relative price of pork vs. beef
When pork is relatively cheap, McRib makes its periodic return. Then when pork prices rise, it disappears again. Sort of like the Halley's Comet of fast food.

11. Makes sense -- a lot of Christmas hams will be getting processed now.
Which means more pigs slaughtered, which means more pork by-products.

15. I've never understood the notion that one slab of bone and muscle from a pig is
good eats, while another hunk is an affront to all that is holy. If you're willing to eat one part that should make all the safely-edible parts fair game.

17. It gets a little silly sometimes, doesn't it? It's one thing to have preferences based
on taste, texture, fat content, pathogen-risk, or whatever - but the squeamishness about one part versus another can get a bit extreme. I imagine culture plays a big role in all that...

16. When they first came out, a local writer's column was titled
McDonald's tells a McFib. About how it wasn't made from rib meat. I've called them that ever since.

18. Personally...
I see nothing wrong with eating less traditional parts of an animal in our culture. Some people seem to really think it is disgusting, but I have no idea why. They call it pork "waste", but it ain't waste, and it definitely wasn't to our ancestors. I understand not liking the processed or chemically strewn meat, but the fact that it is a part of the pig that some don't usually eat doesn't make it dirty or wrong to eat it.

19. It's as though they're trying to create a virtue out of wasting food.
I won't eat any meat, but if I did I'd eat it all. Parts is parts.
