SOROS: I'M DONE Donating to Democrats
George Soros, the billionaire financier who was an energetic Democratic donor in the last several election cycles but is sitting this one out, is not feeling optimistic about Democratic prospects.

“I made an exception getting involved in 2004,” Mr. Soros, 80, said in a brief interview Friday at a forum sponsored by the Bretton Woods Committee, which promotes understanding of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

“And since I didn’t succeed in 2004, I remained engaged in 2006 and 2008. But I’m basically not a party man. I’d just been forced into that situation by what I considered the excesses of the Bush administration.”

Mr. Soros, a champion of liberal causes, has been directing his money to groups that work on health care and the environment, rather than electoral politics. Asked if the prospect of Republican control of one or both houses of Congress concerned him, he said: “It does, because I think they are pushing the wrong policies, but I’m not in a position to stop it. I don’t believe in standing in the way of an avalanche.”

48. are you saying
to post at a site you have to like them? I post at Arizona Central which is my local paper's site which I find not a paper I agree with most of the time, but one that reaches enough of my fellow citizens of our area. So should I quit posting there because I don't care much for the site? Aren't you being a bit unfair?

First the party apparatchik alienate the progressives and "professional left". Now they're alienating the big money backers.

Not good.

Also - what's YOUR agenda for dealing with the problems we seem to face, equally, but apparently separately???

45. They're finding out karma is a bitch. Why didn't they work on what they ran on?
instead of allowing industry insiders to direct policy? Some within the administration spent more time attacking progressives than the real opposition.

10. Apparatchik doesn't mean communist.
The word originated in the USSR, but nowadays it's more often used a generic term for those who are "agents of the apparatus", or, more plainly, those who actively promote and defend the status quo. Those who place political loyalty above all else. The "My Party, Right or Wrong" types.

17. What a hoot!
The replies to this news are pretty much all negative. The thread title is unkind to Soros. None of the comments are in his support. That may or may not be right, but that's the fact.

So instead of kicking this to the greatest page, where it will be seen by all and in that process hold Soros up for more derision, it gets unreced, keeping it hidden.

Seems to me that if one is unhappy with Soros, one would be inclined to rec this, not unrec it.

Oh well, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla. Different strokes for different folks.

44. Let's talk about the thread . . . . .
. . . . Now, I have no personal stake in this thread. If Soros doesn't want to give money, I couldn't care less. But clearly a lot of people do care and based on that, chose to reply to this thread. Since the thread's OP had a negative tone, and many people agree with that negative tone, it seems to me they'd want that where more people would see it - the Greatest Page.

Instead, what seems to have happened here is they replied with appropriate negativity and then, just to be as negative as possible, unreced the thread.

How many threads get unreced for a similar reason?

Should this have been on the Greatest Page?

Neither your opinion nor mine matter.

And have you noticed? There is not a thread posted that doesn't get reced or unreced. When the unrec got added, everyone felt the need to vote on every damned thing they read.

34. That's what he explicitly says in the article- "I AM NOT A PARTY MAN"
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 11:04 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
But somehow that becomes "I was a Democrat but not anymore because I hate the Dems now!"

Either people didn't read the article or they did read the article and are hoping nobody else did.

giving up on Republicans, no matter how bad the "prospects" are. It's very sad.

We don't have George anymore, then that's a terrible sign.

What about Hollywood donations? We don't even get those much anymore.

This is why we lose all the time.

Good luck, Mr. Soros. Perhaps you can now join DU.

He's just waiting until 2012 no doubt and stepping out of the fire from the right wing for a particularly ugly election cycle.
