8. What A Neat Concept
Imagine all the good that could be done if more money went to help average people, struggling with daily needs instead of perennial wars and war chest funding!

18. I love that they encourage small monthly donations.... the kind you won't even
miss from your account. And many people who receive help from them come back to be monthly donors when they get back on their feet too.

22. It really is a great org... read about the history of it... really amazing how he started it all.
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0811/066.html

"Keith Taylor used to be a $350-a-month philanthropist. As an English teacher at Middle Tennessee State University, Taylor put up a little Web site offering to help people out with small portions of his $33,000 salary. He'd wade through his e-mail inbox and send small checks to people with one-time needs. There was the woman who asked him to help pay for her son's glasses and the man who needed $65 to cover his monthly auto insurance. It was direct and personal, charity scaled down to the basics.

Television interviews and profiles of the check-writing professor followed. "I was the crazy guy giving his money away," he says. "I just wanted to tell people, if you need help let me know. That's all it was supposed to be.""

14. ACLU.
Unlike I lot of non-profits (and I've worked with a few as a volunteer/intern) they actually do direct service work (i.e. litigation) as opposed to just advocate for a cause. And the litigation they have done has had a huge impact on our country today. They've been responsible for some landmark cases, and even though I disagreed with their stance on Citizens United, I still believe that our society would be overall worse off without them. If it wasn't for the ACLU, who would defend our rights?

They help those with neurofibromatosis. I have had 3 friends die from their tumors and know of others who lost their children to tumors that turned malignant.

23. The Carter Center.
www.cartercenter.org

Jimmy Carter's other charity.

They monitor elections (in places like Sudan) and fight diseases, especially parasites. River blindness, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis. Malaria. Diseases that can be cured with a fifty cent dose of the heartworm medicine you would give your dog.

Nigeria, Niger Now Free of Guinea worm disease.

Expenses FY 2009
Programs 90.4%
Fund Raising 5.8%
Administration 3.8%

====
I got my BA in biology so that's why I am interested in a charity that goes after crippling, inexpensively curable, parasitic diseases that other charities seem to ignore.
