Berlin city official concerned over wave of anti-Muslim attacks

According to Jan Stoess who is a city councillor in Berlin's Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, there have been physical assaults against Muslim women whereby their headscarves had been pulled down.

"I believe these incidents take place quite frequently and are worrisome and we have to ensure that this does not jeopardize social peace," he added.

Nearly every fifth German hates foreigners and migrants, according to opinion polls. Most of the Germans with a xenophobic view are comprised of older people with only little education. The hatred of foreigners can especially be witnessed in the new German states which were parts of former communist East Germany, and in small towns and rural regions.

There are 16 million people living in Germany who have foreign roots. Every fourth baby born in Germany has either a foreign father or mother.
