French unions are staging a national day of strikes and demonstrations in opposition to the government's pension reforms - the third in a month.

About 500,000 people had taken part in protests by noon, the interior ministry said, higher than previous turn-outs. Transport has been disrupted.

The cabinet wants to raise the minimum retirement age from 60 to 62, and from 65 to 67 for a full state pension.

Meanwhile, key workers are set to vote on whether to begin open-ended strikes.

1. Do French workers suffer from outsourcing?
Both France and the US have/had Unions. What makes the French so much more successful versus the plight in the US? Their smaller size? Different type of unions? Do the same issues with outsourcing or HiB types situations exist there? I wish it was so easy to get uS citizens in such protest modes.

2. Their unions are strong....

they never suffered the likes of Taft Hartley which removed the most dynamic union organizers and officials for being Reds. Commies are in the forefront of union action throughout Europe and they are effective.
