Mutilated Afghan Woman Gets Award, Reveals Prosthetic Nose

'Bibi' Ayesha, Mutilated Afghan Woman, Receives 'Enduring Heart Award'

After having her nose and ears cut off by her husband as a punishment handed down by Taliban elders, "Bibi" Ayesha was left for dead. The courageous young woman found her way to an American military hospital where she was treated for her wounds.

In August, Ayesha traveled to California to begin an intensive eight-month facial reconstruction.

Ayesha attended the event wearing the prosthetic nose that has been made for her by California doctors.

1. Can I say it too many times, that I am so grateful to have been
born in the US? It isn't that something like this could not happen here, because there are sick individuals everywhere. But at least it isn't sanctioned punishment here. This woman is beautiful and I cannot imagine what she has gone through.

On the other hand, if one was born via Articles of Incorporation, you have unquestioned liberty.

11. She is quite beautiful....I hope that she can stay here.
Beyond that, I agree with you...Mutilating people will NEVER be sanctioned here or, IMO, in any area of the civilized world.

20. "Mutilating people will never be sanctioned here"
You do not understand where we are right now. Torture is already accepted by our master media. Do not for one instant believe that your fellow countrymen will outright reject that gays and liberals do not deserve deformation.

After all... it's not killing, right?

21. I'm sorry,
I simply do not agree.

Is it possible?..Of course. Anything is theoretically possible. Is it at all likely?...I think not. Again, there are sick individuals everywhere, but state "sanctioning"?..That would indicate a level of "change" in the state of western democracies that would not only be "unprecedented", it would be the cultural equivalent of a nuclear meltdown.

29. Hear, hear.
It would be a travesty to send this lovely young woman back to the people who oppressed, disfigured, and tried to murder her.

I would love to see a new immigration policy - refugee status and education for any woman in a country where sharia law is practiced, and/or where women do not have full human status.

37. Absolutely not what I was saying. My comment was about the
picture of her with the prosthetic nose and how great it looked, but I can see how this could be misread. You are right, it was a vicious act and my post was intended to comment on how this kind of punishment is not acceptable here. And hopefully, one day, it will be unacceptable worldwide.

44. The disfigurement perpetrated on this woman was aimed at her physical appearance.
The fact that said appearance has today been restored to what would probably be considered "attractive" is certainly germane to the discussion. You're trying WAY too hard to take offense at an innocuous comment.

it's such a strange thing to think about the small number of Iraqis who have been helped by the U.S. versus all the thousands we've maimed or blown to bits.

23. Agree...while it's a heartwarming story...there's a propaganda angle to it that
is disheartening. All the maimed children and adults who will never be "poster people" for reconstruction. The birth defects from depleted uranium, the psychological scars.

A poster girl is fine, but one person is hardly a reason to invade a country and cause the destruction we have done.

24. I know that one census said that U.S. forces murdered over 1 million Iraqi
citizens. How many Afghans have been killed? How many maimed? How many have lost a loved one? Yes, the Taliban are awful and should be driven from power, but that's not what we're doing over there.

28. A touching story indeed, but I've got a quick question
Who funded that "intensive eight-month facial reconstruction?" The military? Volunteers with the expertise? As a donation from our insurance industry? Or will she get a whopping bill at some point?

I didn't watch the video at the link, so if it's explained there, I apologize for being lazy...

45. A most encouraging and happy development!
However what saddens me at the same time is not just the foul religionists who hurt her in the first place, but also that millions of like-minded Afghans are the opposite of elated over this news. They will have viewed what we evil secular Americans have done as an affront to their god and Sharia law.

I say fuck 'em. But it gives a telling glimpse into what we're up against.
