CEO arrested and corporation held liable!
Edited on Tue Oct-12-10 07:47 PM by cynatnite
No, it's not Exxon. It's not BP. It's not Massey Energy or any other corporaton that ruined the environment, cost people their jobs and their lives.

It's a company in Hungary that is responsible for the toxic sludge. The state is going to take control of the company and the CEO has been arrested.

I can't imagine living in a country where CEOs and corporatons are held responsible for the actions of their companies.

6. EU law is serious business
Don't mess with the Danube. The Hungarians know that the EU will back them. We were discussing this here in Jamaica because we are very vulnerable to bauxite sludge and we damn well know that no one would be fired.

27. I think the corporation would still rule.
Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 07:35 PM by obxhead
We are run by a Capitalist system.

It would force corporations to maintain some responsibility. They wouldn't be angels though. There would still be a cost benefit analysis associated with every choice when it comes to safety in all forms.

9. Can you imagine the long line if CEOs/corps were held accountable in this country. The
courts would never get through the backlog.

19. I can imagine it. And it wouldn't take long. And hear's how.
Close your eyes and imagine along with me. The legal model we will be imagining is the same one that handled foreclosure proceedings in Florida . 90 seconds a case.

Bank of America . 90 seconds. Chase. 90 seconds. We could have it wrapped up in a day.

13. If that had happened here...
the company would have to pay a fine (the company, not the people working there) that would reduce their stock price by .5% for a week, then everything would be back to normal. The people responsible would suffer nothing at all.

"Corporate Personhood" reduces we actual humans to 2/5 of a person.

18. I must respectfully disagree.
I can most definitely imagine living in a country where CEOs and corporatons are held responsible for the actions of their companies and if our government won't do it... well...

21. Interesting contrast. There were "criminal" antitrust pleas recently, but no prison time as far as
I know. Saw/Posted a thread on the antitrust rice fixing involving airline cargo prices in latest breaking about a month ago. So, there still seems to be a difference between Hungary and BP/PG&E/airlines, etc.
