98th House - Republicans lost 27 seats (Dems picked up 27-Repubs lost 26 - 1 independent)

Dems lost 16 seats in the 1984 landslide but gained consistently until 1994

108th House- Republicans gained 8 seats in the first Bush midterm and then crashed 4 years later losing 32 seats with the Dems picking up 34 in the actual "peoples' uprising".
Republicans lost 21 more seats in the 2008 election.


Clinton's first midterm saw 54 seats change parties.

But there were in the minority to start with in 1981-82. They had 192 seats to defend in 1982, far fewer than the 255 Democrats have to defend in 2010.

If the Reagan Republicans of 1982 had to defend 255 seats, given the state of the economy back then (unemployment was actually higher than today), they would have likely lost 60-70.
