U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, the firebrand Democrat fighting a conservative onslaught to boot him from office, sat next to an empty chair during the campaign's first debate Tuesday night.

His Republican opponent, Dan Webster, didn't attend. That gave Grayson free rein to take shots at the former state senator and trumpet his own accomplishments as the District 8 congressman from Orlando.

"This is how democracy is supposed to work: An exchange of ideas, people laying out options for the voters to decide," Grayson said. "But there's somebody missing and that's the Republican candidate, Daniel Webster. He thinks that he's going to have this election handed to him by the special interests."

... his (Webster's) campaign has also made it clear that he won't debate unless the match-up includes only him and Grayson.

Republican leaders have accused Grayson of conspiring to create the fledgling Florida Tea Party and put Dunmire forward as a spoiler to siphon conservative votes from Webster in the Nov. 2 election.

For his part, Grayson has said he won't debate unless all the candidates are invited.

Oh that is SO true. Agree or disagree with Ralph Nader - but he SHOULD have been allowed to debate. I'm glad Grayson is standing up for this. Yeah the tea-party guy might take some votes from from the republican but that's not the fault of Grayson or the people of Florida.
