Doctor Condi Rice LOVED Aretha Franklin and "the whole Motown scene!"
From Princess Sparkle Pony:

So! There you go: Condi was actually able to name a Led Zeppelin song after claiming she loves "hard rock." She also bravely admits, "Of course, I loved Motown... Aretha Franklin... and the whole Motown scene." FYI, here's an abridged list of record labels Aretha never, ever recorded for: Motown.

But who cares, because it's CONDIBOOK DAY! The holy book has descended from above, and all is right with the world. Now, finally all Americans will know what it's like to be teen Condi, trapped in a locked room with nothing but a piano teacher for sustenance while terrible violent racism swelled right outside her door.

I can't find any credible reviews yet, just puff pieces, but then again, why, after all, should Condi journalism be any different today from any other day?

2. being totally serious
does hearing her name cause your stomach to turn?

I can't even see her face on the teevee without wanting to throw something thru the screen while shouting "LIAR"

Peace

24. I was wondering why she decided to crawl out from under her rock.
She disappeared after 1/20/2009. Wish she wouldn've stayed "disappeared". I've not missed hearing her name, too.

3. Appalling.
Aretha's recordings from the Golden Age didn't even sound like Motown--the bass and the drums are a dead giveaway. One could forgive Dr. Rice for confusing them with Stax/Muscle Shoals (there was some connection there), but not Motown. A musician ought to know better.

4. I understand Rice is a fairly accomplished pianist
Perhaps she should stick to that from now on. If she practices hard, maybe she can enter the Gilmore Festival in Michigan.

I think that's the only way I could ever appreciate anything she's capable of....

5. Aretha is from Detroit, so this must have confused the doctor
But then the doctor moved to California about 10 years after Motown did, so this may also be confusing her.

And also, Aretha is a member of the Democratic party.

Nice to see Princess Sparkle Pony hasn't fizzled out after all this time.

6. Ugh. I was wondering why NPR featured her in this huge puff piece
this morning:

"Condoleezza Rice Details Her Civil Rights Roots"

"The life of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is anchored by seminal events in U.S. history, from her youth in segregated Alabama to helping plan the U.S. invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan."

HECKUVA JOB, CONDI!!!

10. "Motown" is now short for the 60s Detroit sound. Nobody cares about the record label
which moved to LA in the 80s, anyhow, IIRC. :hi:

That's a big whatever. :hi:

16. I think Motown records moved in the 70s
It's too bad. It would be nice if Detroit was still as important to the music industry as it was in the past.

12. Aretha Franklin is very much a "Motown" star. The title is
used to describe artists from Detroit. The name Motown means more than a record label.

Su likes to argue anything I post, is that the case with you too? :) Romeo is the Detroit-area. Point being, just because you are from Detroit, doesn't mean you are part of the "Motown sound". Hell, I'm from Detroit. If I start recording I wouldn't be a "Motown artist"! :)

25. As I said above: "Motown" refers to 60s Detroit soul and r+b
Nobody parses what record label was on (especially since "Motown" records hasn't had any connection to the city for 40 years.)

It's really not complicated.

26. Evidently some people do parse it, that's not complicated either.
You would never see Aretha on a "Motown Anniversary Special" as a Motown artist. You just wouldn't. Anyhow, it's really not that much to get into a lather over :)

later!

18. Until she explains her "nobody ever dreamed they would fly planes into buildings" comment
nothing else she says or does matters

People have been trying to hijack planes and fly them into buildings in D.C. since Nixon was president, the idea that our national security adviser would not know that is freaking bizarre!
