Is that giant pulley used in the Chilean mine extraction supposed to be hypnotic?

I find myself having difficulty pulling my eyes away if I look at it on tv. The wheel is speeding up, slowing down, and I'm wondering what the ride is like in the FENIX capsule with each lurch, etc etc etc.

Let's hope everyone gets out alive and the rest of us can learn something from this too.

They were supposed to paint black and white spiral banding to make it look properly hypnotic. And the announcer was supposed to chant "buy Chilean fruits and wine" at the same time. But the guy with the paint for the spirals became ill, and the tape with the chant was jammed. We citizens of the world are lucky, because this Chilean conspiracy to take over the world may have become reality. And then what would we do? Become addicted to Chilean sangria.
