*** OFFICIAL CHILEAN MINER RESCUE THREAD #3 --- CHI-CHI-CHI! LE-LE-LE! CHILE! ***
Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 11:47 AM by Subdivisions
What a remarkable, world-warming event to witness! This is so much fun, to see these men emerge from their 70-day tomb to the hugs of their family and cheers of their country men and women!

Thanks to DUer Tx4obama, with an assist by pinboy3niner, for keeping Thread #2 alive through the wee hours of this morning! :bounce:

We're about halfway through the 33 miners. Mario put on quite the show last night!

Chi-chi-chi! Le-le-le! Chile! Chile! Chile!

4. Hello miss gateley! Yea, I watched until
about 3am this morning when I fell out on the sofa, lol! I got up a little while later and went to the bedroom and turned on the TV in there and promptly fell back to sleep.

This entire experience has been just amazing. I can't imagine how those miners feel as they come out of that hole.

Chi-chi-chi! Le-le-le! Chile, Chile, Chile!

14. I know - it reminds me (kind of) of the night I stayed up and watched a
19 inning Mariners game -- okay, this will be the last one, but you just want to see what happens next! And in this case, I really wanted to be sure it was going as planned - no glitches.

This entire story is amazing, as you say. From the very beginning.

Ha! Number 17 is holding up the flag of the Chilean soccer team! (The President used to own - or still does -- a percentage of it!)

5. It is great to see Americans helping in the Latin Americas.
Instead of the usual usurping of their governments.

We should be engaging the world in this manner, instead of gun ship diplomacy.

9. You guys probably covered this in one of the two previous threads, but
last night they were saying that the Presidents of Bolivia and Chile and become somewhat close during this (because of the Bolivian miner) and that will probably ease tensions between the two countries.

We are an amazing, giving, loving species, when the "real world" doesn't get in the way, :pals:

12. All true. In fact, Evo Morales has already been to see the only Bolivian
who was in the mine, 23 year-old Carlos Mamani, at the hospital.

I was asleep when this was supposed to occur so I don't know if President Pinera and President Morales saw each other yet. But, yes, there have been a border dispute that concerns land controlled by Chile and contested by Bolivia which cuts Bolivia's access to the Pacific Ocean.

Hopefully the two contries can work out their differences after all of this.

10. Happy for the families...PISSED AT THE FAR RIGHT GOVERNMENT!!
The ENTIRE EPISODE can be attributed to one thing, and one thing only: PURE REPUBLICAN GREEED!!

The mines MUST be taken over by the government, and most of them should CLOSE.

ALL profits from the mines should be completely taken over by the government, and all the greedy bastard stockholders and Republican profiteers be criminally charged and have their finances completely repatriated.

As happy as I am for the poor miners, I am a HUNDRED TIMES AS PISSED AT THE REPBUBLICAN MINDSET THAT MADE THIS HAPPEN!!!

You guys can be happy for the families, but I'm concentrating on making sure that there are NO MORE FAMILIES that will ever...EVER!! have to go through this hell on earth ordeal, 100% caused by the Republican Party and its sinister offshoots.

But I'll check out the others, thank you! The first link provided live coverage, so I stuck with that, even though I couldn't understand the Spanish, LOL. It was dramatic enough, just watching... They've had live updates on the TV, but not continuous coverage, and everything else seems less important after watching this miracle unfold. :hi:

and then I laid awake for hours wondering why so much cooperation and trust and love between a government and its people should seem so stunning. Don't think I've seen that many joyous hugs in my entire six decades of life.

Then I think about Katrina and the Gulf oil spill and I wonder what the hell is wrong with us.

But God, its good to see the aftermath of unrestrained greed handled in the humanitarian way, for once!!! Wish I could understand what they're saying about how they'll deal with capitalist greed in Chile once this catastrophe is behind them.

30. It could be that these miners are very much like MOST of Chile's citizens
while Katrina & the Oiltastrophe affected an area (people) in our country where most people are NOT considered to be the "norm"...and early on, Chilean government officials probably chose to NOT make it political. Once they are all rescued, I expect the focus to change to the shoddy management that led to the cave in.. but for now, it's all about the rescue.

36. The norm?
People lost during Katrina were not the "norm"? The 11 lost and millions more harmed by the oil blowout weren't the "norm"? And if they weren't, should that make a difference?

I agree that for now its about the rescue, which is amazing and heartwarming to see, but I'm fairly certain that "somebody" is already thinking about what brought the miners to this pass and figuring out ways to prevent it in the future.

wife to re-marry him after his rescue. Mr. Rojas' family has said that they are impressed with his writing since being trapped and that they did not even know he could write so eloquently. Mr. Rojas' wife had always wanted a Catholic church wedding but Mr Rojas always replied it wasn't necessary. He has now changed his mind and wants to have a big wedding to re-marry his wife.

Viva la Rojas!

Seems as if Mr. Rojas was the primary medical care giver to the trapped miners during their interrment.

But, she did have a different last name, which is Salinas.

The interaction between Ms. Salinas and Mr. Rojas once they laid eyes on each other strengthens my assumption that she is his wife. But I could be wrong.

and not the wife. UNIVISION reported he requested his companera be there.

He has been separated, but not divorced, from his wife for some years and has been living with the companera.

Companera translates to someone with whom one lives but the couple is not married.

Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 04:03 PM by Tx4obama
The President of Bolivia was NOT at the rescue site when the Bolivian miner came up. They said that the Bolivian President would be meeting with the miner at the hospital (which he did and video was shown of that). That was somewhere around the time that the President of Chile disappeared from the rescue site and was gone quite a long time (I thought at the time that maybe he went to bed for a bit), then later BOTH Presidents were shown being at the hospital together. Then after that BOTH Presidents came to the rescue site and greeted the miners together as they were coming up.

Also, I hope they figure out how the last person out will latch the door.

The Chilean president and his wife and the miners girlfriend were at the rescue site to greet the miner - they were holding little Bolivian Flags on sticks. But the Bolivian President was no where in sight at that point. If he had been there the camera would have been on him. The Chilean President hugged the Bolivian miner as if he were Chilean :)
It was a very nice moment.

113. I was just thinking....
That every time the empty capsule went down last night they should have been putting water/food/etc in there to send down.
That way if there had been a problem with the capsule (at any point) then there would have been a bunch of supplies down there to tide them over for days/weeks or whatever.

As much as this operation is costing it would have been no big deal to leave a few thousand of dollars of extra supplies down there.

The 'capsule' never went all the way down into the mine until the first rescuer went down, they said they didn't have the capsule go down all the way cause they were afraid someone would jump in.
So, everything before that had to have gone thru the really little hole that they were getting their supplies.
Well, luckily everything is going well so far :)

He lived in Talcahuano when the 8.8 mega-quake hit. He and his family survived.

He then survived the tsunami that hit Talcahuano.

So he decided to go to the "Norte Grande" (Atacama) to work there in the San Jose mine.

Now he has survived the mine cave-in.

A very fortunate man.

about two miners back.

I clearly heard her say "Papa bello."

"Beautiful Papa."

That one got to me too. The little boy crying when No. 1 came up last night more than moistened our eyes too.

226. Wow, Last rescue personnel reached the surface, Let's celebrate!
What a successful story but it would not have happened without American intervention.

234. What an insult to all Chileans

to the miners, their families, the rescue workers, the government and the 15 million people of Chile.

"but it could not have happened without American intervention."

236. No, it was a group effort.
All of the communications were handled by the Chileans.

228. Bravo to the rescue workers, miners, Chile, & all the people from around the world that helped
Sure was a lot accomplished in 24 hours
Now that that's over I can get back to focusing (obsessing) on politics again!
It's going to take some time to go read everything I missed :)

Ciao! :hi:

231. Gawd, these two months have been so stressful with the miners down there,
glad the President admitted that they need to rethink licence. Cannot say how much am happy that all the miners survived. The world is a better place when countries come together and help out. I bet the US was on the forefront of this rescue operation!
