People argue because they like to argue, and because they think they're right about something, as they perceive it.

In a publicly available forum, there's always a number who have serious substance abuse that is ongoing and a number who have serious mental or emotional issues ongoing. To expect that they won't argue over their hot button issues, as they may construe or misperceive them, is not a good expectation.

Add to that a number of garden variety contrarians, and there you are.
